Hi there, I just bought a 92 MR2 NA. The throttle pedal is really stiff and requires a bit of effort to actuate. Is this normal for MR2's or is there more to this?? I had been driving a 93 Toyota pick-up up till this last weekend when I made the MR2 purchase..
-   The throttle cable on my '91 NA is also frayed. Does anyone know where to buy a new one and can it be fished through the cable housing or does the whole thing need to be replaced, i.e., the cable inside and the houseing. Lastly, is it a big job?
I think not! I have 91 turbo MR2, I found the throttle cable wire to be frayed, not only making pedal stiff. but when it breaks will leave you catching a bus. Good Luck, Joe
Before replacing you throttle cable check it for any frying. If it looks good leave it alone. Instead take of your intake hose and check inside your thottle body for build up of greese and dirt. Clean it out if dirty.
If the cable is frayed the cable must be replaced. Since the Mr2 is a midship, there are 2 cables ( if there is no power steering then it will be 3). The part has to ordered through the dealership and is quite pricey at around $80 + tax ( for the small one). the junction box on the right side you will find the junction were the cables meet. just follow which line needs to replaced and is very easy.
I actually had the same problem with my MR2 last summer. My cable was so freyed that I litterally had one steel strand left. I ended up purchasing 2 throttle cables for the 91-95 MR2 N/A. So that means I have a spare... If anyone is interested and has a similar problem, then I am more than willing to part with mine for $75 plus shipping. I paid $90 plus shipping to get it. I can send pics if you're interested. It's only sitting collecting dust at the moment i my garage. Let me know!
Yes, the throttle pedal is quite stiff. It should be with all that power lying behind you.

I would guess there is a problem with the throttle cable. I test drove two '91 NAs before buying ours. One had an extremely stiff pedal, the other twos did not.
Seems to be a somewhat common problem, along with the handbrake cable.

Thanks to all that replied.. It turned out to be a dirty/sticky cable. I sprayed some WD-40 INTO the cable, and it is much smoother and requires less effort.
If your cable is sticky or the throttle is stiff, this quick fix is worth doing and only take a minute or two.
