1998 Malibu Starting Problem

By Putty - usenet poster

My 1998 Chevy Malibu has problems starting which have just started in
the last few months and are getting worse. It can happen when it is
cold but also when it is warmed up. You have to crank it many times,
sometimes for 10+ minutes, to get it to turn over.

The dealer has changed many parts and the problem has not improved. A
local repair shop suggested that it may be the anti-theft device.

Does anyone have any experience with this problem? What could we
suggest the dealer look at since they don???t seem to have any idea?

Same Problem

Mar 13, 2009

-   I have a similar problem with my 2005 Chevy Impala. The car refused to move forward after idling in traffic for a couple of minutes. Once i moved forward I pulled to the side of the road and turned off the ignition. Waited a few minutes and it would go. A few minutes later it did the same thing. I had it towed to my repair shop that had just replaced my catalytic converter the day before and he couldn't find anything except there was an Anti-Theft code that came up. Is this something I can fix myself or do I need to take it in to the dealer? -   Guest

-   98 Malibu, 2.4L engine. turns over but will not start, changed ignition switch electrical part, ignition control module, coils are good, did timing chain kit, then find that there was no voltage on the pink wire going to the ignition control module which is suppose to have 12volts with the key on run and start. If I take a wire from the positive side of the battery and connect it to the ICC ignition fuse in the Fuse Relay Center and turn the key the engine starts right up. Engines dies as soon as the jumper wire is removed. There is no voltage at the ICC ignition fuse with the key in Run position and I don't know why, any suggestions.-   CarBroke

Speaking as a dealer techOne of the goods ones i might add...Heres
some questions i have for you sure it may be a passlock issue(Theft)
But what are some of the things they replaced, do you know what codes
if any it had? Pass lock it one of them things low voltage can
tripIf i knew the codes could save you alot of money and tell you
how to fix it yourself...The theft on your car will most of the times
start then cut right off..How many miles are on it ?I cam give you any
info you need if you can give me somemore information..

Hi Putty:

The pink wire is a resistance wire to limit the electrical current to the coil. They go bad. This happened to me and I installed a new one myself and problem solved. By the way, the coil and points will work for awhile by bypassing the pink wire as you described. It could get you home in an emergency. FYI

Comment from CarBroke: Concerning the 98 Malibu 2.4L engine with the "Engine would turn over but not run" problem. Got hold of a wiring diagram that showed the pink wire coming off the ignition switch to be the main wire to supply 12 volts to the Fuse/Relay Center under the hood, on driver's side of vehicle in the Start/Run position of the ingnition switch. ( C2 on the ignition switch). I spliced a 12 guage wire from C2 pink wire about an inch from the ignition switch to F5 in the Fuse/Relay Center to energize, with 12 volts , the ingnition system. The car runs so far, have other minor problems to deal with.

If you have a theft system light flashing in the dashboard, then you have my problem. You have to turn the key to the "on" position and wait ten minutes. After 10 the light will stop flashing and the car will start. It has something to do with the accessory computer not reading the chip in the car key.
