The timing will have to be set with a scanner tool,or the vehicle will not recongnize the timing when you change it,and the computer is storing the old information.

If the spark plugs are firing, and it has fuel in the cylinder, then the scanner will have to be hooked up to reset the computer and set the timing.

1996 suburban with 5.7l have good fuel pressure, sparks at the plugs, cranks with starter fluid but wont crank when i disconnect the crank sensor.

when you say good fuel pressure is it 55 psi with the key on and engine off? any thing less then 50 psi will not start the engine. if the engine starts with starter fluid then the problem is in the fuel system.

When i stopped the 1997 suburban 1500 it was running fine. i tried to start it 2 days later and it wont start. it sounds like the engine is fighting itself. it cranks then stops then cranke a little but...

check the timing and compression as this is a typical chevy senario, runs good it seems and shut off and now fights and locks up. Pull #1 plug, put into wire again and rest on exhaust manifold so electrode is very near metal, this will cause a spark. now put finger in the plug hole and crank motor, does the plug spark at the same time finger gets pushed off plug hole (compression) ? Also you can bring #1 cylinder to top ,(compression ) and remove dist cap, where the tab on rotor aims is it aiming to the plug wire in the cap that goes to the #1 spark plug. If any of this is not in line then the timing is off and you have to check. 1) timing chain and gear, 2) distributer gear on the bottom of dist which messhes with cam gear, (you can check this with cap off and try to spin or turn by hand.) And the most severe case is the cam broke, after all other checks you can pull off a valve cover and turn motor over and check all lifters for open close movement. I hope i didn't scare you . AND i also wish the easiest fix for you as well.

How do you replace timing chain in a1988 chevy s10 with a 2.8 where are marks on gears set do you use #1 top dead center or #4 tdc

Line up the crank gear timing straight up, line up the cam gear timig mark straight down (so the marks are closest to each other, or facing each other). the distributor will be firing #4.

I have a 97gmc suburban and when you push the 4x4 button it just blinks

Your Suburban needs to be hooked up to a transfer case/transmission capable scanner.

There is shift test built in a good scanner to test things out.
You need to get codes and do the shift test to find the problem.
Have it scanned and the mechanic will be able to tell you the issue.
