Question about 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

I have a 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera with the 2.5. It will start then idle for a second and shut off. I've checked all the usual stuff spark plugs and wires replaced fuel pump and filter checked fuel lines checked fuses and relays checked all grounds and wire connections. It started when I went and got fuel left the gas station parked the car and shut it off since then it has not started.

    The engine light did not come on while the car was still running. Oh and I hate this question....of coarse the engine light comes on every time I turn the bloody key on its suppose to....... Can't read codes don't have a reader

    have the ignintion contole module checked also look for water in gas

    Well I dropped the tank again and drained it put new fuel in, checked a sensors cleaned all connections and still the same.

SOURCE: changed spark plugs and wires now car wont start

I know this might be obvious but the obvious is often the problem. Did you replace the coil wire that goes from your coil to the distributor cap? Also, double check to be sure that your wires are connected in the correct order. A little more clarification might help. Does it turn over? Does it just click? When you turn the ignition key then let off does the car clunk or make a wheezing sound?

89 Cutlass Ciera, Check Engine Light, stalling, low idle
Have you checked the fluid levels? If you are low on oil, then this could be the cause. I would also try putting fuel injection cleaner in the gas tank to clean out your system. Especially in winter there seems to be more of a need to clean out your gas. It could be a dirty fuel injection system and this would help if it is.

Can you show me a diagram of which spark plug wire goes to what spark plug on a 89 oldsmobile ciera please.
Standing in front of the car looking at the the coil packs, there are three of them. From left to right, the first coil pack is 1 & 4, the second coil pack is 6 & 3, and the third coil pack is 2 & 5. Now standing in front of the engine, the three cylinders in front of the radiator are 2,4 & 6 starting from the belt side of engine and the ones in the back off engine are 1,3 & 5.

I have a 1989 oldsmobile cutlass ciera and it won't start. It turns over but won't crank. I had the fuel pump change and it ran for a month and I had the pump replaced again and it ran for a couple of days...
Change the Fuel Filter as well. Also check your spark system (plugs, wires, distributor) and your Air Filter.

What you should do when it stalls is check to see if your loosing spark at the plugs.If you are then you probably have a bad ignition module.It is located in the rear of the motor.The ignition coils are mounted on it.One other possibility is the pcm.It is located under the dash on the passengers side.You can get a used one at most salvage yards.You will need to get the number from the old pcm.You will also have to remove the old prom from the old pcm and install it in the one you get for replacement.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Engine missing out
  1. check the battery .
  2. check engine oil for dilution .
  3. check piston ring and engine piston that are corroded .
  4. Change oil engine oil. Check the ignition system.
  5. check the spark plug and set the firing order of the spark plug.

How do I replace the ignition module on a 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass? Where is it located on the engine? The engine started but would not continue to run. No sputtering or any other sign it is going to cut off. Does the ignition module have a fuse?
