Question about 1998 Mercury Sable

3 Answers

I have a 1998 Mercury Sable LS Dual Cam. My A/C Compressor went out a couple of months ago. The Compressor is seizing up causing my belt not to turn so the car won't start. Mechanic said a/c needs to be replaced. I cannot afford to have it repaired right now (1000.00) estimate. I've found out there are no "pullies" fthat I could install in place of the compressor for this type of vehicle. Can the compressor be rigged some way to turn? Can I replace it with "just a compressor"? Everyone says the whole thing needs to be replaced to make the Ac work. I can endure being without a/c, but I can't do without my car. Please! Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Looking at your accessory placement, I see no good reason why you couldn't just get a shorter belt--perhaps the one that you would buy if you had bought the car without the A/C option.
The routing will be different and you might need another idler pulley--not sure. I cannot find a routing diagram for the case with no A/C option, so I will not declare victory at this point. See if your parts store has a belt for your car without A/C, then ask them to show you the routing diagram. See if it has the same pulleys as your car and it the routing would interfere with the compressor hanging in place.

I would try to find a new belt to bypass the A/C pulley. A new belt can be measured (Auto Zone)and the alternater can be adjusted to take up any slack. Lots of luck. Also a junk yard may save you some bucks on your new A/C Sometimes a car may be wrecked but the engine, trans. A/C are O.K.

What size belt do I need to bypass Mercury Sable AC Compressor

I had to do the same thing on my Toyota Avalon. I used a flexible cloth measuring tape to measure around the pulleys (minus the A/C, of course). I had to cut the pulley off the Avalon A/C compressor because of interference issues. You may or may not have to do the same.

Bypass ac compressor with shorter serpentine belt 2001-02 Mercury Sable LS

Because in most cases the routing will not work without the pulley for the compressor being in use. That's why some engines have a dummy pulley available to use in place of the compressor.
Not using the compressor pulley can cause the belt to drive a pulley the wrong direction, or not have the grooved side of the belt on a pulley.

So my 1998 mercury sable had a broken sway bar link a few months ago and I fixed that but now the tire is still rattling when I drive and when I brake it's not so bad at speeds below 35 or above 60 but...

Have you had your wheels balanced? As an unbalanced wheel can cause vibrations at that are only felt at certain speeds. It's a inexpensive thing to try and it might work.

A/C Fan on a 1998 Mercury sable won't come on

It could be low freon and your compressor clutch is not engaging. Have someone turn on the AC while you look at the pulley at the compressor. Low pressure will cause it to "try" to engage or click and then shut down. AC is a "danger" item in self help manuals.

I have a 1999 Mercury Sable. The only problem I have had with the car is the serpentine belt. It started 3 months ago . . . the engine was overheating and the belt was shredding. I bought a belt...

is the a/c working ok??? shredding the belt may be cause by the a/c compressor problems. the "chunk" maybe not, but shredding tells me something does not spin when it should. I dont know why the mehanic put a new pump on that had a problem with the pulley, it should be smooth. anyhting that the belt runs should be smooth and east to turn, make sure that all of the grooves are clean, no remnants of the old belt.
