It's called a variable resistor and is on the fan blower box.

Blower is the name we use. We use the word fan for the one by the radiator.

I have a 1988 735i and smoke came out the inside vents recently.....fan barely works. Any suggestions??

If it smells sweet -it is coolant

If it just was brief & white is was refrigerant

If the blower works it is not a fuse

The blower motor may be old & worn out & need
replacing & you may have a leaking heater core

Good Luck under the dash

Look at some You Tube Video on R&R of
a heater core

How do i find out if my blower fan resistor needs replacing

Find it & test it

There is just ducting that comes out at the floor,
dash or cabin & windshield & a mix of those together

You can have heat or air conditioning out the same ducts,
so you need to keep things like that

Do all the under dash HVAC Blend Doors switch the air
flow to all the required locations as in your owners manual?

If so & you have heat & you have a/c, then your where
your asking the question. Is your problem ONLY the various
blower speeds, regardless of heat or air conditioning?

If you have several blower speeds or air flow but not all, then yes,
you work on the blower resistor or module, whatever you have

Without service manuals, all you can do is ask a repair shop to
look it up for you or try the internet for a location

If you have no electrical testing experience or no volt meter
your done, you could replace the part & solve nothing, if you
do not test to confirm failure of a part or system problem

You & thousands that come here, make the statement my fuses
look good

No they do not

ALL things need to be tested

Fan motor on heater has stopped when I switch between the settings ( defrost to upper & lower heat) I hear the gates moving but the fan won't come on ( no heat ) it's very cold please any sugestions...

first check the heater fuse...then you want to unplug the fan motor lead and run it straight to the battery...if it works then you will need to check the resistor assembly..it is located on the heater housing right near the fan..it controls the different speeds for the fan and usually has 4-6 wires coming off it. If these don't fix the problem...try looking in the fuse/relay box both in the cab and under hood to see if you have a relay for the heater fan...as it may be defective

Heat & AC blower (fan) does not come on. Just

if it worked on some settings and not on others then the blower motor resister has gone bad. its mounted on the heater box near the fan about half way up the heater box. they are cheap and easy to change. give that a try first

Getting heat in the heater core, heater door are opening, but no heat coming out the vents, help thanks

It sounds like the blower motor is not working. If you don't hear it running when you switch it on, check the fuse first. If the fuse is OK, you will probably need a new blower motor. It could also be a faulty fan switch or blower motor resistor. Once you remove the blower motor assembly, you can test it by putting battery voltage across the contacts with jumper wires, making sure to get correct polarity. If it does not spin, it should be replaced. If the blower does work when removed, the fan switch is probably at fault. The resistor is usually indicated when the fan works only at certain switch positions, but not all.
