I bought a 2003 Impala with the 3.4 engine six weeks ago, and just passed 500 miles, almost all city driving. My third tank of gas gave me 17 mpg, which I find disappointing. My neighbor with the 2001 3.8, whose praise of the car helped me make my decision, says he's getting 26 mpg with the same kind of driving. Is he just trying to drive me insane? Is this a break-in issue? The EPA puts city mileage at 21. Your comments, or comparative numbers, are welcome. --Newstech

My 2001 impala 3.8L gives me 17-18mpg and that is 80-90% city miles. One time I got 21mpg and the worst was 16mpg.

I own a 2000 Impala LS with the 3.8, and when I commuted to another city for work, it consistently got 23-24 (with air conditioning on). Now it is used for heavy traffic town driving, and its lows range from 17.9 to 19. On highway trips its best has been 33 with no a/c. One recent highway trip at 75-85 mile per cruising with a/c on netted 27.5. Roy ...

For mixed driving commute, I average 19-20MPG with my '03 Malibu 3.1 V6 engine (rated 20-29). I haven't had it on a road trip yet. When I drive the same commute with my wife's '03 Dodge Stratus 2.7 V6 engine, I get 24-25MPG (rated 20-28). If I use my '97 Grand Caravan with the 3.3 V6, I average about 18-19MPG. The odd thing is that the Malibu is the lightest of the three at 3100 pounds vs. the Stratus at 3300 pounds and the Caravan at 3600 pounds, yet the Malibu gets essentially the same mileage as my Caravan. Not sure why I can't even achieve the minimum "rated" mileage with the Malibu, yet can average somewhere in the middle of the rating range with the two Dodges (which one would expect). The Chevy dealer says my mileage is normal...I don't think so, but what is one to do? I will say that I agree that the 17MPG you're getting with your Impala is disappointing...especially having to fill up three times just to go 500 miles!!...I've gone farther than that loaded up on vacation with one tank with my Caravan (25-27MPG highway with a 21 gallon tank). I will say that your mileage will probably improve as the engine runs in...I was only getting 16-17 for the 1st couple thousand miles on my Malibu...so it is a little better than it had been. Based on some comments in the Malibu NG (alt.autos.chevrolet.malibu), it would seem that the most recent engines are not providing nearly the mileage that the ones made a couple of years back were providing. One posted that he routinely got 32 on the highway with his '01 Malibu 3.1 until the engine had to be replaced to fix a severe piston slap problem and then got much worse mileage after the replacement (I don't remember the number). So, it wasn't the driver causing the difference in that case. Makes one wonder what is going on with the newer engines...doesn't make sense!

I get 27-28 every week consistently; this is 75% highway, 25% city. (Houston, TX).
Are you sure you're calculating this right?

My 2001 Impala LS with 3.8 gets excellent city mileage. I just filled up tonight, and got almost 23MPG. My dad's 2001 Malibu with 3.1 is consistant at 21MPG all city driving. BTW, my ol'trusty 91 LeBaron 3.0V6 has been the MPG champ since new. It has NEVER dropped below 25MPG around town, and one time is averaged 34-35MPG on a 2000 mile round trip between Tucson and San Jose. Bill 88 Lancer Shelby 91 LeBaron Convertible 01 Chevy Impala LS

I have a 2003 Impala with the 3.8 engine. With about 1,000 miles on it, I checked the mileage and it was a little over 24 mpg. That's a combination of city and highway driving, mostly highway, as I commute to work in another town.
