Question about 1990 Subaru Legacy

1 Answer

1990 Subaru Legacy Wagon 4 cyl. auto It has 270K and has had regular service all it's life. Most recently at 260K we had the timing belt changed and associated tune-up. It ran normally around town for about 5 months but all of a sudden it runs as if one cylinder has checked out. It idles violently rough, exhaust smells like unburned gas, the rough idle doesn't go away with rpm change. Does the car have a control module that I can change? Can I have it hooked up to a repair shop computer and get a readout of what's wrong? Does that have to happen at a Subaru dealer across town or can the shop down on the corner do it? Are there any "usual suspects"?

THIS SOUNDS LIKE A WEAK CYLINDER ,FROM NORMAL RING AND PISTON WEAR A COMPRESSION RING COULD BE BROKEN! I WOULD JUST CHECK COMPRESSION ON ALL 4 CYLINDERS. AND LOOK FOR EXCESS BLOWBY IN THE AIR FILTER OR FROM A VALVE COVER VENT HOSE, OR OIL IN THE AIR CLEANER.

I fouled up the timing on my 1990 Subaru Legacy Wagon. Tried resetting it to the factory specs but it still wont start.

You have not set it to the factory spec, and its probably 180 degrees off. Rotate the crank to top dead center (the mark on the crank toothed pulley, align the cam timing marks, refit the belt THEN release the tensioner. Rotate the engine manually to verify that all the timing marks realign themselves.

Automotive problem. 1991 Subaru Legacy C

Lubricant may not resolve it sounds like it could be your water pump froze up. Look to see if it is turning. Even if it turns it still could be bad.Usally the first sign of it going bad. Stop by your local auto parts store to see if they agree.

Is there a timing belt or chain in a 2004 Subaru Outback wagon? If it is a belt, at what mileage should it be changed?

The 2.5L engine has a timing belt and it should be replaced at 105K. The 3.0L engines have a timing chain and are not serviced regularly.
