Question about 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

Been told my '97 cavelier's engine cradle is rusted through. I have a friend who says we can fix it ourselves instead of paying the $680 to have it done. Where do I find the steps on how to replace it? Any other info would bew great as well. Car runs very good thats why I would like to fix it. Hope to get at least another 2-3 years more out of it. Thanks Robert

I was the one posting all over the internet about the letter Chrysler sent me but it doesn't do any good. If the car was from the rust prone states and was built in a few months during a certain year they will replace it. I got mine replaced under the care warranty I bought when I got the car but after a month they sent me a letter that they were covered for 150,000 miles and returned my co pay. Then my other Pacifica cradle went out and I called and told them I would sue them if they didn't replace it and I would have. It cost me 250 dollars on the second Pacifica. There is no recall at the time because no one has died yet from the engine and transmission dropping to the ground and losing the steering and brakes ( the brake lines go across the cradle) The dealership that replaced the cradle forgot the large washers that hold the rubber bushings that hold up the cradle and as I was driving I lost all steering as the rubber bushing ripped out of the engine cradle in the back the cradle was an inch off the ground. The dealer said it was their best man and he would never forget the washers. It was towed back to the dealer and all new parts were put on for free but I bet Chrysler didn't know anything about it. If I had been on the expressway like I was earlier in the day I could have been killed

Loud rattle noise in Camshaft

First, your engine has rocker arms, if you have a 4 cylinder you have 8 rocker arms, and if it is a 6 cylinder you have 12 rocker arms. Now if it is indeed a rocker arm making the noise, the cause is most likely a bad lifter or a worn cam shaft.

I was just told my 2000 malibu has a rotting sub frame and that is why it makes noise when i turn and the steering wheel does not lign up anymore. how dangerous is this and how expensive and how common?

I would not drive the car, especially if there is alot of rust damage. It would be rather pricey to replace engine cradle. Probably $500-1000, there is alot of work to replace it, and the price of the engine craddle itself, but it can be done, as long as isn't effecting where the cradle mounts to the body. This has been a problem with alot of cars over the years.

What is a engine cradle

The engine cradle holds or "cradles" the motor in place. It acts as the sub frame of the car. Hyundai has a big problem with the cradles rusting through in places making the car unsafe to drive.
