My '00 Intrigue does the same thing, I did alot or research into it and
the best I could come up with is that it's the alternator. Some say it's
the way it's mounted, others say it's some internal component in the
alternator, either way it's a common problem on these cars and Olds
knows this. There is no recall on this, but the newer alternators don't
have the same problem. So yes, replacing the alternator will fix it.
I love the car, but there are a few common problems that all Intrigue's
have that I feel are GM's responsibility to fix, but maybe I'm just
bitter.
I'm also not too happy about the way the 3.5l was orphaned, but thats a
rant for another day
