Help: Brake lights on 1995 Chevrolet Lumina sedan

By Janice - usenet poster

Looking for a schematic or some help with my 95 Lumina brake lights,
the turn signals work, the emergency flasher works, and the center
brake light works, but the main brake lights don't work, have tried to
follow the wiring from the fuse to the brake pedal switch, and it is
ok, but can't see where the wiring goes from there, i know that
somehow the turn signal circuit controls the brake lights, but can't
find any info on how itr does that. can't find any uptodate chilton
books on the local libraries, the closest i can get is the 1992
lumina, but that is no help.

-   I have checked all of my fuses and bought a new flasher box for both the signals and emer. lights now my signal lights work but all my brake lights are out.  what could it be? -   Guest

-   Had the same problem with no brake lights. Actually, the upper brake light in the back window would work but not the others. Discovered that if I played with the signal lite switch I cud get them to work intermitently. Seems GM has a problem with the switch, the interior workings warp with time and because the "cruise control" is incorporated into the same turn signal switch the brake lights wiring MUST run through the turn signal switch. This is done so that, when you touch the brake pedal, when "cruise" is engaged the electric signal shuts of the cruise control, a safety feature. I had the turnsignal switch replaced, no more problem!!! GM knows this happens but has no recall or warranty fix! It's your dime.-   1stonraceday

-   My lights are now bad enough that it is shutting my car down. I have noticed that there may be a short just over the battery and just behind on the rod that sticks up which is covered with a plastic cover. The plastic cover has now melted. -   silverado1

Yes, it's the multi switch in the steering coloumn. This switch is a known problem, but GM won't issue a parts recall because the problem wasn't found within the first 10 model years. The problem is that as electricity flows, it generates heat at the switch contacts and these contacts warp and won't make proper contact.
I've played with the signal lever and found that if I pull back just slightly while using the brakes the brake lights activate. Just need to find a way to keep the lever in position until I can afford replacing the switch.

My guess is that your problem is in the turn signal switch. This switch
disconnects the left brake power from the left brake light when the left
turn signal is on, and so on when the right is on. I would guess the switch
is broke (plastic) and that the brake power is not making it to the brake
light. The center brake light power comes from the peddle switch directly.

That is about what i was thinking the problem might be, but without a
schematic it is hard to troubleshoot, and i hate to take it to the
dealer at 50+ dollars per hour. but i guess i'll have to do it.
besides if it is the turn signal switch the steering wheel has to be
removed, and with airbags, i don't dare screw up something. thanks
anyway.
