Car overheats after getting off the highway and getting stuck in traffic. Turning the heat on or air-conditioning makes the engine temp dial go down to normal. What will help the car from overheating?

Thermostat is a good place to start..although be careful of the housing if its a Zetec engine..they are plastic and tend to crack..although the most likely thing is the radiator fan relay..very common issue..(there are 2 primary and secondary) but if the tstat hasnt been changed you may wanna do that too..

Sounds like a thermostat problem, may be stuck closed causing no circulation in the coolant , first i would check your coolant level when vehicle is cold , if that is ok then have the thermostat replaced , if this does not correct the problem , it would most likely be a blockage in the radiator or somwhere else in the coolant system. Most of the time this is a thermostat issue

You should start by checking the thermostat for the radiator. It controls the flow of coolant to your engine. Turning on the heater allows the coolant to circulate through another type of radiator. You should also check your radiator fluid to make sure you have enough( the fluid should be changed around every 5 years).

Car overheat.

Check the radiator fan operations. Gas mileage sucks because the air filter box is toast. Computer can't get an accurate read on incoming air.

The temp on my 92 vette flucuates to much. It runs cool (180) on the highway but climbs to 230 in traffic, but never overheats. Any suggestions?

It's normal for an old car to have such heat fluctuations, and it's normal to get warmer in traffic, it can't absorb cold air like in a cruise. You say it never overheats. It's ok, don't worry.

Its overheating when you go up long hills because the engine is not getting adaquete air in the system. The radiator is angled to get optimal air a certain way. It may overheat but you shouldn't start seeing smoke.

My car is falling apart

Overheating in traffic and then running fine on the highway is a reasonable sign that the radiator fan is not working, it gets hot in traffic and the fan doesn't come on, then on the highway the forced air through the front grille will be sufficient to cool the radiator down.
The fan not running can be one of four things.
1. the fan it self dead.
2. The radiator thermal switch.
3. The relay for the radiator thermal switch.
4. The fuse blown.
The fact that it stalled when it was getting hot could be one of a number of things including the gasoline evaporating simply because it was getting hot.
The fact that you cannot start the car up now leads me to suggest you have an electrical problem that is common to both situations.
If I had to hazzard a guess I would suggest that whatever is stopping the radiator fan running has probably just knocked out your fuel pump.
You need some specialist diagnosis on this car, time to call the garage I am affraid.
