Question about Mitsubishi Montero Sport

1997 Montero 4x4 Rear brake calipers are frozen and dragging on the rotors. I need to release the pressure by the bleeder screw so that I can drive to repair shop. Will I still have front brake function if I loosen the bleeder on both rears or only 1 of the rear wheels?

Might be easier and safer to replace the calipers yourself. You would be spilling fluid the whole way to the shop and will eventually empty the reservoir. We can help you DIY--it is not too hard.

I have a 2005 Chevy Equinox LS and the drivers side front brakes keep locking up. Can I get some help with this problem. None of the lights come on when this happens.


Most likely the brake hose to the caliper is bad. They deteriorate from the inside and clog up, not releasing the fluid. A way to check is raise that tire pump up the brakes, release the hose at the caliper, if the caliper releases, the hose is bad, if it doesn't the caliper is bad or you have no brake pads left and the piston can/is cocked a bit.

No. It is the brake hose that is going to the caliper. These deteriorate from the inside and clog up. I recommend that you do all of them. Once one goes the others are not far behind. Also to check this release the pressure from the caliper threw the bleeder valve, if it releases then it's the hose for sure. If it doesn't release at all then the caliper needs replaced.

If you have no e brake that tells me your problem is something to do w/rear brakes. Pull your re brakes back apart and make sure everything is seated properly. Sounds like you didn't adjust rear shoes out far enough. Double check rear adjustment THEN bleed again - rt rear -> lft rear ->rt frt -> lft frt.

This may sound dum but its been done a few times and is a simple mistake , the bleeder screw is up top, with the caliper on the bleeder screw should be up top, if not then calipers are on the wrong side, it sounds like air in the system, also you pumped the pedal up to push out the piston so pads hit rotor after bleeding,i dont see anything else, if the pedal is good with pinched lines at caliper then it got to be calipers are wrong or on the wrong side and the bleeder is not atop caliper,also you bleed the rear also? these trucks and cars use left caliper and rt rear on one system of the master and rt front and left rear on one side, let me know about the caliper, heres a picture to show you what i mean. hope this helpsjohnjohn2_23.jpg

Right side rear brake drags


Remove all rust from pad and caliper sliding surfaces,eg metal to metal,not the pins,they get synthetic brake lube. Apply anti-seize to all sliding surfaces. Make sure you can screw in the rear caliper piston,if applicable, and manually ratchet up the parking brake,after caliper and pads are on. Bleed/Flush all 4 Wheels. Make sure you can slide the pads back and forth,before lubing end tabs. You may need to file a little off the ends or just remove the paint. Make sure parking brake cables are really releasing.

Rear brake pads were replaced. Rotors are hot and wheels are tight. What might be causing this?


if both wheels have this problem check the flex brake hose that comes from the frame to the rear axle,if only one wheel has the problem it could be the caliper or that wheels flex hose,also check the slides on the caliper or the caliper bracket the brake pads have to be able to move after pressure is released,in most cases the slides freeze up causing one brake pad to constantly apply pressure.and there for heating up the rotor one other thing is your emergency brake cable hanging up.

One brake rotor gets very hot after 30 miles


on the wheel that is hot, jack it up and see it the wheel spins free or drags? if it drags, then loosen bleeder on the caliper, it if now spins free, you want to replace that caliper hose, if it is still dragging, then the caliper piston is stuck and you will need to replace it.

The most over looked culpret and is also a good possibility could be a brake hose that is deteriating on the inside of the hose or frozen or un-lubricated slide pins. Not just any old grease will do. You you need caliper grease for the pins. The grease has to be able to withstand the heat and not break down. You don't want to go overboard with the grease either because it will collect brake dust and gum up. A light coat is great. If the caliper is able to be compressed back into the caliper with the bleeder valve broken loose then it's likely you have a bad hose. Replace hose and bleed brake system starting from the right rear brake, then left Rear, right front and finally left front. If it doesn't back off check the slide pins for ware and that they function and are not frozen up. Do you see any wet fluid leaking from the caliper or on the brake pads and rotor? I have a 1 ton Ford Diesel that the Rt Front caliper wasn't backing off until I broke free the bleeder valve and found that it was not the caliper, but the hose was bad, the slide path was all rusted and the slide pins were shot. Replaced for hose, slide pins, wire brushed slide path, and greased slide pins and path with caliper grease. Bought a small bottle of brake fluid to bleed the brakes. Total caost was aprox $25.00. New caliper for my truck would cost me $64.00 plus core charge for the old caliper. I had to change out my calipers in the rear as well so that's how I know the cost saved. If you have those little shiney clips that the pads ride on (top and bottom) you need to pop them off and knock loose any rust, brake dust and dirt and then clean up the clips with a wire brush. What happens is rust (usually) bubbles up under the clip and makes the clip raise up slightly. You can't really see the clip raised up but the tolerance is so close that the pads will actually bind up on the bubble and make it seem like the caliper isn't releasing. Depends on what style you have.

2000 chevy 1500 silverado- rear brakes overheating


Have someone push & release pedal while at wheel with problem. See if it takes a while or slow to release. If yes, have wrench ready on bleeder screw, and try again, if it sticks/holds, crack bleeder screw, if it releases, I'd replace hose.
