Question about 1997 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

I have a 1997 Ford Taurus right-hand drive (residing in Malaysia). Car labeling says GL but engine cylinder head says "DURATEC 24 Valve V6" so not sure which Ford engine it is. Prospective problem is with oxygen sensor. Diagnostic codes (run twice) are: P0135- Upstream heated O2 sensor heater circuit fault (Bank 1, Sensor 1) P0155- Upstream heated O2 sensor heater circuit fault (Bank 2, Sensor 1) P0171- System Adaptive fuel too lean (Bank 1) P0174- System Adaptive fuel too lean (Bank 2) P0708-Transmission Range Sensor Circuit High Input I'm guessing that codes 171&174 are a result of 135&155? And unstable idling for 708? Before I buy new upstream oxygen sensors I am wondering what an "O2 sensor heater circuit fault" is? Is this a wiring/connection problem? An electrical problem? Is this something that can be solved without replacing the O2 sensor? Or after 13 years is it time to replace the sensors anyway? Chilton's talks about checking the O2 circuit loads and about circuit damage, but not how to correct it - they go directly to Replacement of the O2 sensor. Thanks for your assistance - Jim

Hello! I am sending two diagrams...#1 is O2 sensor location and #2 is a vacuum diagram...Before you spend a lot of money replacing O2 sensors lets eliminate other possible causes of heater circuit failure...O2's have heater circuits to bring them up to high temperature quickly so the computer (PCM) will have close control...I would suspect poor grounding, or connector contact corrosion...If you have an ohm meter...Set it on the X10 scale...Measure from center of the negative battery post to the chassis (bare metal)...And then to the engine block...Record both readings...Radio Shack sells a no-touch contact cleaner called DEOXIT...Spray a very small amount on all O2 connectors (male and female)...Oxidation is chemically removed...Re-connect...
Check all vacuum lines for broken, cracked, loose or collapsed...Send results....Guru...SaailerI have a 1997 Ford Taurus right-hand drive - aa07bbb.gif

Location of thermostat 1997 ford taurus dohc 24 valve v6

on the 1997 Taurus DOHC v6 the thermostat is conveniently located at the front passenger side of the engine, just up over top of the the mud guard. There's about a dozen screws (bolt heads) to take off, slip out the mud guard and there's the lower radiator hose and the thermostat housing! The thermostat is held in by a reusable O ring and is pretty well engineered for being in such a surprising location.

How do you tell the difference between the two engines?

The easiest way to tell is that on the Duratec 3.0 V6 the spark plugs are mounted in the valve cover into the heads. On the Vulcan 3.0 V6 that are mounted under the valve cover in the heads.

Correct firing order/plug wires/distributor cap

If it's the 3.0L V6 Vulcan or Duratec engine the firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6. The rear bank cylinder head is 1-3 with 1 on the passenger side and 3 on the driver's side. The front bank cylinder head is 4-6 with 4 on the passenger side and 6 on the driver's side.

The two have nothing to do with each other. You just get a starter for a 99 Taurus with a 3 litre engine.

WHERE IS THE #2 SPARK PLUG/CYLINDER LOCATED?

Change all of the spark plug wires one at a time and label them so that you know where to put them back. I had the same problem and did this. The problem went away..
