Question about 1995 Chrysler Cirrus

1 Answer

Hello My 18 year old neighbour bought his first car last week, a '95 Chrysler Stratus 2.0 with manual gear box. Now the tachometer is broken, I was told that there were some plastic parts inside it (sprockets?) which were damaged. And that there is one piece inside the engine right below the tachometer which also needs to be replaced. The local shop took a look at the car and told him that in order to replace the tachometer they had to remove the gearbox and some other things, it would take about 8-10 hours to fix it. Concidering the rates here in Norway, this repair will cost him more than the car did. My first question is: Is it really neccessary to remove the gearbox to replace the tachometer? And then the next question: Is it possible to override the tachometer? I know this is a safety issue, but if the only consequence is that the engine is shut down at high rpm, I guess this is something he can live with until he gets a new car. (It is possible to avoid high rpm, and if he still does - well, then he has to get a new car) Thanks!

Thanks again, this forum is really helpful and quick!

Now I've been told that it is not the rev counter that is damaged, it is the speedometer...
My suggestion was to buy a GPS if he wants to know the speed instead of fixing the damaged speedometer - the GPS is much cheaper and may be used in his next car.
I thought this was a good idea, until someone mentioned the problems when it comes to insurance (milage) and that the authorities needs to be 'convinced' that a gps is just as good as a built-in speedometer..

So I guess an expencive repair is needed....

Thanks anyway - I've learned a lot about Chrysler :)

The engine has a rev limiter inbuilt,so after 6250 revs it will cough and sputter.the rev counter is for people who drive to strict rev limits to conserve fuel, and the obvious drivers who drive to the max power/engine revs for "fun"most men drive to the "sound" of the engine,so a rev counter is excess to your money.(once he gets his "no claims discount" down he will buy a bmw anyway.........)

Thank you for your quick reply!

There is one other question - does the tachometer have any direct influence on the engine other than preventing high rpm? (Fuel injection and so on?)

later model cars use electric pulses from the distributor, and that also has no effect on the engine.

the other A 318 V8 14mpg but was a beast 4wheel drive the only problem I had with the v8 was when it rained water got on the dash bord,,,never figured out where it came from,
BUT I'd buy a 98 or newer one...

Air conditioner: If the air conditioner gradually stops cooling and/or the airflow from the vents decreases, the computer (PCM) may not be sending a signal to the compressor clutch relay to cycle off, which causes the AC evaporator to freeze up. (1991-95)

Automatic transmission: If the transmission will not engage when first started, chances are the torque converter is draining down. Chrysler will correct the problem by installing a check valve. (1993)

Automatic transmission: If the transmission won't upshift in cool weather, it is probably due to defective cast iron seal rings in the governor drive. (1992-94)

Engine fan noise: In warm weather, the fan makes a roaring sound. Dodge will replace the fan, the fan clutch, and, on max cooling systems, the radiator cap. (All)

Exhaust backfire: Exhaust backfire and/or a popping noise in the exhaust may be caused by a defective Powertrain Control Module. (1994-95)

Oil leak: Rear main seals on 2.5- and 4.0-liter engines are prone to leakage. To prevent future failures, Chrysler has a rubber plug available that goes in a hole above the starter that protects the rear main seal. (1996)

Oil leak: Oil leak at the filter on 3.9-, 5.2-, and 5.9-liter engines is likely due to a warped adapter plate. (1995)

Oil pump: Oil pump gear wear results in bucking and surging when the engine is warm and lack of lubrication when the engine is cold. (1992-93)

Rough idle: Because of a problem with the idle air control motor, the engine idles rough, stalls at low speeds or when decelerating, especially in warm weather. (1992-94)

Suspension noise: Front ball joints wear prematurely forcing relacement of lower control arm as well. Replacement joint with grease fitting is now available. (1990-96)

Transaxle leak: Automatic transmission fluid leaks from the speed sensor in the transmission. (1994)

Water leak: The roof seams leak water that seeps down behind the dashboard onto the floor. (1993-95)

My tachometer does not work.

Look on the back when you have it out, are the 1 or 2 little "burnt" spots? Get some solder, flux and a solder iron, and put a tiny bit of each on the burnt spot(s).

95 dodge stratus transmission problem

Whoever told you that you need a new transmission was correct!! I had to have mine replaced last September. Unless you have a friend that's a mechanic it's going to cost you at least $2000.00 if not $2500.00. Hopefully you have some mechanic friends. GOOD LUCK
