Problem with FM tuner in Sony CDX-C680

I have a Sony in dash AM/FM CD player, model CDX-C680. This is
a fairly expensive item, setting me back about $350. It is installed
in the dash of my 93 Chevrolet G20 custom van. When playing CDs, it
produces a very nice sound, and I am quite pleased. However, the FM
tuner is causing me problems. I installed this about a month ago, and
at first I thought everything was great. Then I started noticing a
"pumping" effect when listening to music from the FM tuner. After a
great deal of critical listening, trying to determine exactly what was
happening, it seems that the high frequencies are "coming and going"
(increasing and decreasing) as I drive down the road. This produces a
"pumping" effect, much like bad Dolby Pro-Logic decoding, and is quite
distracting when you are attempting to enjoy the music. Anyone have
experience with this problem or anything similar? Should I attempt to
get this unit replaced under warranty?

It sounds like you have one of 3 problems. 1) Bad unit. Not
likely. 2)Weak signal reception. The tuner will switch into and
out of mono mode to hold as strong a signal as possible. Do you
notice the stereo indicator going in and out in time with the
"pumping"? 3) Multipath distortion. Big problem in my area. I
live on the side of a large granite hill. Transmission towers
are at the top of the hill only about 1 1/2 miles away. I cant
seem to get a decent signal to save my life. The signal will
bounce off the hill, large buildings and other structures as
well as go directly to my antenna. You might consider using the
Sony diversity antenna function if your unit supports that. It
basically uses 2 antennae and compares their signals and rejects
the weaker one.

Whats Up? After reading your problem, I was stumped but I do have one
sugestion. I think you should double check and make sure the inverter (metal
box coming out of the back of the radio) is not bundled together with any other
wires cuz if it is that might be your problem. If you do find the problem
please e-mail me at rberetta45aol.com cuz i have the same head unit Good Luck

Actually, the CDX 680 has a new system called ADAPTED RECEPTION which
automatically balances signals.

I am beginning to strongly suspicion that this unit is bad.

No, it is definitely not a "weak signal" problem. Very strong
station, 100,000 watts, transmitter tower well within range. The
problem is not "stereo separation", but a decrease in the
high-frequency response. This unit does not have a "mono" setting,
or I would definitely try it to see if that would help.

I installed a Sony CDX-C660 head unit in my wife's truck several
months ago. We were very well pleased with that unit, and I wanted to
purchase the exact same unit for my van. But when I went to purchase
it, I was informed that the CDX-C660 had been replaced by the
newer CDX-C680. The 660 continues to function perfectly, and the 680
is driving me nuts.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will double check that. I noticed the

the install, but had no idea what it was or what function it performs.
Could you provide more information?

That metal box is a power inverter for the display illumination, I believe.
