Question about 1995 Saab 900

1 Answer

Won't do reverse. Drives fine otherwise. Little uncool getting into 4th. Pops out and grinds when clutch released in reverse. Linkage has been upgraded as per recall. Adjustments in that area seem not to work. What's the answer?

I.m not familiar with Saab but I'm thinking that your transmission might have a bent fork inside that changes the gears. possible the one for 4th and reverse. I've heard of that problem on other carswith manual trans.

97 vw gti will not shift into gear when car is on but shifts into gear when turned off just fine , will f Grind if I force it into gear when car is running , pedal feels a little stiff as well ,

The clutch is not releasing/disengaging. Your clutch linkage (if you have mechanical linkage) or hydraulic clutch system may not be working properly to release the clutch. If you had the work done by a shop, take it back to them and explain the problem. They should stand behind their work.

Wont shift into 4th gear and grinds

sounds like stick shifted car, manual. trans. so.
clutch is dragging
if it has clutch master cylinder, and slave
first check the clutch filler cap, is the fluid full?
some have a cable clutch, and needs to be adjusted every 20k miles. did you.?
or the shift linkage is off, and cant get fully in to 4th, so grinds.
again service skipped now bad.
why not get it serviced.?

Grinding clutch

I'm a little confused on your description of the noise. If I understand you correctly It is making the noise when it shifts smoothly into gear but at the same time it makes a grinding noise ? It possibly can be synchronizers if the grooves on the inside of the synchronizers are worn bad enough to where the gear isn't slowing down enough causing a grind as the clutching teeth on the gear mesh with the synchrode and the shift collar.
If it is making noise in all gears except 4th you may have countershaft brgs failing. The power flow in 4th gear goes directly through the mainshaft and has a 1 to 1 ratio. All other gears the powerflow goes through the countershaft causing a load on the countershaft so if you have bearings failing in the countershaft you will hear noise in all gears but 4th.
i hope I understood you correctly .

Just recently changed my clutch in my 1995 geo metro. it was working fine. car was tuned up before my long road trip from orlando to nyc. until when i reached sometime in NC, and 4th gear will not...

the shift linkage may need to be adjusted a bit or the shift forks and engaged gears for 4th and 5th may have worn enough that they need to be inspected and fixed.

Will not go all the way in to reverse grinds and

This could be due to several causes. I would start by making sure that the throwout arm on the tranny is being relaxed entirely when the clutch pedal is at rest. Also have someone else watch the action of the throwout lever (sticking out of the bell housing) and make sure you have around one inch of throw(movement) at that point. You might also find that there is an available adjustment on the shifter linkage to allow it to go into reverse more smoothly. Good luck, Dana

Transmission problems (gear linkage)

The gear linkages are not correctly aligned.
Is the gearbox mounting in exactly the same place as when you removed it?
Even a 1/4 inch will offset the gears.
hope this helps
