Question about 2002 Mazda MPV

1 Answer

I have a 02 Mazda MPV. I unfortunely washed the engine off with a garden hose. Tried starting the engine didn't start, noticed a red glow under the car. Stopped trying to start it. Call repair shop. That was 2 yrs ago now and to much money, and didn't get the car fixed. Got a waver for the vehicle registration last year, had to spend $200 minimum. I have (2) OBD codes: P0421 and P0431- Warm up catalyst below threshold, bank 1 and bank 2. What do I need to do/replace?

    Thanks jturcotte, that was quick.

I had the water removed from the plug chambers, new plugs, wires, flex pipe exhaust P/N 40-050 from Mazda w/ O2 sensor on it and the O2 sensor, and a aftermarket catalytic converter (don't remember which one). Another shop could tell if a cat was replaced (another dilema).

  • murphykp33 Sep 10, 2010

don't think injectors were looked at.

  • murphykp33 Sep 10, 2010

    sorry for the confusion.
The car is running fine other than the error codes.

  • murphykp33 Sep 10, 2010

Do you have any idea which Catalytic converters and or O2 sensors do I need to replace.
Bank 1 and Bank 2, I don't know the locations.
    Thanks.

Seems your car is dumping gas into the chambers. Do you smell gas at exhaust pipe? Codes are coming from O2 sensors. You seem to have 2-stage catayltic conversion, and the first ones are trying to burn the gas but cannot do a good job of it--too much gas. There is where you get the red glow. I'm only guessing, but I wonder if the injector system shorted during the garden hose incident. Was that looked at while you were paying out all your money?

Hmmm...I don't understand these repairs. You say the car will not start, right? But none of these repairs would affect the start. Does the car start now or not?

OK, and that catalytic part is not glowing anymore, or does it still glow?

I will have to study this a bit more later. I have an appointment with my wife right now...

After further thinking/research, I have another question and some recommendations.
Do you have the results of the emission test and can you send them to me here?
I would also like to know what your fuel mileage is.
Before replacing more parts, I would recommend a thorough test using a scan tool that will record the output of all 4 O2 sensors over time from a cold start to operating temperature.
If you know someone that has a good scan tool, perhaps you can get this data for free.
I still think the problem is with the engine running rich and not with the catalytic converters, but the O2 data will settle that issue for me.
Sorry I can't solve this easily for you.

WHAT IS A PVC HOSE IN MAZDA MPV

The PCV is a valve and a hose, that sucks engine ring bypass gasses and reburns them. if it plugs up the engine leaks oil.

if the hose cracks it sucks air and the AFR goes lean and bucks.

jerks.

only on engines (unstated) that use a MAF sensor.

engine that use a MAP sensor ,race too fast with full power and no jerk with air leaks.

next time post engine type. as we can not guess this.

the list.....

2.0 L FS-DE I4 (99-02)

2.3 L L3-VE I4 (02-05)

2.5 L GY-DE V6 (99-01)

2.5 L AJ V6 (99-02)

3.0 L AJ V6 (02-06)

2.0 L RF MZR common rail turbodiesel

WHAT ENGINE PLEASE.

if unsure, (why fix any engine,if unsure>)but in the USA

the hood EPA sticker states this clearly.

no engine , no country, no joy,

2001 Mazda MPV lost power while accelerating on to highway. I have no codes on scanner and no engine light. Idles OK but placing transmission in drive and holding brakes @ 2000 rpm, engine starts to lose...

You got it, definetely is the symptoms of a bad catalytic converter including the smell.
Fortunately there is only one
Unfortunately they are very costly
You may also notice that if the vehicle is idling for awhile and you look underneath the exhaust may be glowing red in some areas, extremely hot
Hope this helps

1998 mazda mpv code p0170 erase code car runs fine but when i stop for a few minutes it is hard to start and runs rough the engine light comes back on and the code will read p0170 again

This code indicates a fuel ratio problem. I would start by inspecting all the vacuum lines, including the pcv hose and power brake hose. Carefully inspect the air intake hose. This is the large hose between the throttle body and the airflow meter. If this hose is cracked or loose the computer will not sense how much air is being drawn into the engine and it will be hard to start.

Mazda 2001 MPV just serviced. Noticed green

check under the hood and see if you can see where its leaking from might be a hose clamp that you can tighten , if not place cardboard / paper under engine and leave it for a few hours ,return later, any drops will give you an idea of where the leak is. with the engine cold top up the radiator with water only.. do not add antifreeze its only going to leak out again..call the repair shop when they are open..
