Leaks start when bearings or bushings are worn and allow to much play around seals and tear the seals rib

Leaking rear differential seals on 4WD models


if after a long trip you notice that the rear differential has oil leaking out of the drive shaft or the half shafts seals, don't panic. Clean up the entire differential with brake dry clean or electrical contact cleaner spray, be generous around the drive shaft lip as it can hold some oil. Then take a look on the back cover plate for a valve that should move a bit, if it doesn't, remove the valve with a 13mm wrench and give it a good spraying with the brake dry cleaner in both ends and exercising the valve until it clears the blockage gunk. The valve is not shown in the Ford Maint manual, but it is in the Mazda Tribute maint manuals and parts catalogs. The valve is a one way pressure relief , lets air out, prevents air and water from getting in. Check the oil after re-installing the valve. The oil should be ok and just level with the bottom of the inspection plug which just uses a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove. Drive a couple of hours and if nothing is leaking, you're good to go.

In order to replace the rear main seal you will need some auto repair tools and experience . this is a big job , the transmission must be removed to replace this seal, also make sure that the seal is the leak,

oil always flows down, a leak on the top of the engine will flow down and drip at the center rear and look like a rear main seal , make sure that is the leak!!.

Depending on what engine you have and if it has 4 wheel drive the time for a shop to do is from 7 to 10 hours depending on engine size and 4wd,

Rear end whine on my 2002 ford f150 fx4 supercrew is it clutch pack?


Could be low on differential fluid, leaking from the wheel seal. The Differential gears could also be worn from low on fluid or ears was not lined up and have worn it self out.

Service the rear end, inspect the fluid's condition and measure the any play in the gears in the rear end replace is worn out.

You may buy some time by running 50% to 100% Lucas oil treatment in your rear differential. Good luck and hope your differential is not to badly worn.

It should be that easy if the leak is from the gasket. If it from the seal, you will have to remove the drive shaft from the differential and remove the seal and put in a new one. Either way, the repair is fairly easy.

Rear differential / axle noise and vibration.


At this point, I would take the cover off of the differential and look inside. You may be able to do it yourself or have someone else look at it. If there is a problem, you should be able to see it. Look for metal shavings and burned parts.

Do not wait, as this problem can go from a small problem to a big one fairly quickly if it isn't already too late.

Differentials don't last long without lubrication.

Rear Axel Seal


Wheel, brakes etc that are in way of pulling axle out have to come off. Drain rear end fluid, remove rear housing cover, remove bolt that holds pin in differential, remove differential pin, push in slightly on axle to remove "U" clip that holds shaft in, then slide shaft out. replace seal. Reverse procedure for re-install & fill with gear lube. If any questions, get back to us.
