I have the check engine light on and the scan read P0135 error - what is this?

P0135 code is: Oxygen O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 1)

This code refers to the front oxygen sensor on Bank 1.

The heated circuit in the oxygen sensor decreases time needed to enter closed loop. As the O2 heater reaches operating temperature, the oxygen sensor responds by switching according to oxygen content of the exhaust surrounding it. The ECM tracks how long it takes for the oxygen sensor to begin switching. It the ECM determines (based on coolant temp) that too much time elapsed before the oxygen sensor began operating properly, it will set P0135.

Symptoms: You will likely notice poor fuel economy the illumination of the MIL.

Causes: A code P0135 may mean that one or more of the following has happened: O2 Heater element resistance is high Internal short or open in the heater element O2 heater circuit wiring high resistance open or short to ground in the wiring harness.

Possible Solutions: Repair short or open or high resistance in wiring harness or harness connectors Replace oxygen sensor (cannot repair open or short that occurs internally to sensor)

P0300 and p0135

P0300, this is random misfire, or more than two P0135 02 heater circuit malfunction
you need to address the random misfire, it can be a vacuum hose leak a sparkplug wire, or even sparkplugs getting its useful life, as for the P0135 it detecting the engine condition and seeing lean signal as misfire occurs

1996 Avalon, P0135 O2 sensor, bank 1 sensor 2

The P0135 bank 1 sensor 1 is the one on the right exhaust manifold, between the engine & firewall, which is tough to get to. You will need the special slotted socket. The Bosch replacement is available at NAPA or Advance for about $190. I bought two for my 03 Avalon on Amazon.com for $110 each. p.s. DO NOT buy the version that you reuse the plug from the old sensor. Learned that the hard ($) way.
