I have a 90 Astrovan. The ABS light and Brake light are on. All the brakes have been repaired or are in fine shape. The dealer says the EHCU - Electro-hydraulic control unit - is bad. The part costs over $700 and they want another $400 labor to install it. OUCH !
Two questions: 1. How can I be sure that is what is wrong?
2. How can I get Chevrolet to pay part of the expense? The vehicle is way past warranty, but this is an absurd expense. I tried the 1-800 customer service number. They are trained to be polite and patient, but don't give an inch.
-   I think I have the same situation on my 2003 S-10. Over a grand to fix this issue? Nice... I plulled the fuse out of the panel under the hood and that stopped the motor from staying on. I also checked my brakes front and rear. They seem to be ok, no excessive wear. Can I get assistance from Chevy on this problem? -   Guest

-   I have a 2002 Avalanche 2500. My brakes just got done as well. I have no abs when the lights are on. I can shut the ignition off in neutral as the vehicle is still rolling, then start it again and the lights go off for about half an hour?? I am open to suggestions. Is it worth it to find a used EHCU at a local junkyard? I have a hard time believing that the only thing controlling this is a $ 700 part that is obsurd. I know that chevy likes to make money on parts but there has to be a more cost effective way to solve this. -   Guest

Dave, I'd go to an independant shop for an estimate. Dealers usually charge more, and want to do high dollar repairs with little diagnosis. Are your brakes working OK? You could always remove the bulbs (just kidding). -- Cheers, Steve 82 Z28 96 K1500 The opinions expressed here are mine alone and do not represent those of my employer or any one else. I had the same problem with the 4-wheel ABS on my 1992 Astro Van with just over 60,000 miles on it. The dealer determined the problem by by the code stored in the computer, and quoted $900 just for the EHCU. Chevrolet would offer NO assistance with the repair, not even partial assistance. The dealer said the mechanical parts of my brake system were working properly, just the anti-lock computer was shut down. I could slam on the brakes and lock the wheels up now.
While on vacation I found out my brother-in-law had a friend that worked for a Chevrolet parts distributor. He checked with someone he knew, and said the EHCU was the correct part for a code 62, and his best price for the EHCU was around $630. It would still be another $400 to have the EHCU installed.
I decided this was too expensive, and have driven 33,000 miles over the last 1.5 years with no problems. I just have to watch the brake fluid level more closely, and check the parking brake often since the ABS and Brake lights are on all the time.

I have a 92 Astro Mini Van. the one with the top area in it...dont know it that makes a differerence! It wont start unless it is around or below 70 digrees outside. It turns over, but wont start. It is getting fuel and I've already changed the Modulator (as someone @ Advanced Auto suggested (didnt work). I had it tested but numbers say everything is good. When it turns over it sounds & runs good.
