Sorry but that's not what I asked. I want to remove the third brake light assembly, nothing about the brakes. If you know how to do this please send instructions.
    Thanks

I'm still trying to find out how to remove the hi mount brake light unit on my 1997 Isuzu Trooper. It's the third brake light mounted in the tailgate.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks

    Hi Jason,
Thanks for the illustration. I've tried taking out the clips but for some reason the unit doesn't want to come out. Is there a secret or is it just stuck?

    Again thanks for the help

    Hi Jason,

    One more question
The reason I'm trying to remove the unit is to test current to the unit. All of the lights doesn't turn on. The brake lights does work so it's something with the hi mount unit.
It looks like the lights are led.
What is your assessment to the problem?
This unit is over $500 dollars, crazy! lol Might have to install a universal unit to replace this one.

    Thanks again,
    Les

    This will help you.

Using a thin screw, remove the clips from the high mount stop lamp.
Then the lamp will come out.

Hope this helps, let me know if you need more information.

    Thanks

    Hi,

In some case's it is cheaper just to put a aftermarket version lamp on these vehicles but your one may just need the bulb replaced if it is a bulb, if it is LED lights then just replace the whole unit.

You will have to remove the tailgate frame cover on the upper inside of the tailgate to expose the hold down screws. It is just a strip that can be pulled out.

There is a screw located between the bumper and the vehicle you must use
a long phillips to get to it, most likely the plug is loose that is the
    problem I had (Isuzu Rodeo).

There are actually 3 screws you need to loosen on a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo. At
least there are on the LSE model. One of them is located between the
bumper the tail light, and as stated before you will need a long
phillips head screwdriver to remove the screw. The other two are located
along the side of the taillight inside the little black things that
look like air vents. Once you remove all of the screws, slide the
taillight straight back. Try not to shake it out of place or a small
black plastic rod will break. If the plastic rod does break it will not
harm the vehicle or affect the operation of the taillight. Then remove
the corresponding bulb by turning the bracket counter clockwise and
pulling the bulb out. The correct bulb number for a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo
    LSE is 1157.

On the 1989-1997 models all is the same except you need to remove the
screws from the backside of the unit to remove the lens and the bulbs
are pushed in and turned counter clockwise to remove. Hope helps.

Replacing high brake light bulb 2003 blazer

It's mounted up on the roof and held on with a screw on each end. There's a sticky gasket under it to keep the moisture out. Remove the two screws (usually phillips head, but sometimes torx 20 or 25) and persuade it come (peel essentially) off. Pull it out slowly to reveal the plug and unplug it. It's an LED strip so the whole thing will have to be replaced. Easily located on a popular auction based web site for about $50.

It will be either on the outside with 2 small screws or more likely you need to remove a trim/cover of the top headliner area... If still in doubt goto or phone the dealer and just ask the parts dept person to show it to you...

Replace rear window brake light bulb

I just had to do this, and it isn't all that easy or quick. First, gently work the gray, carpet like cover loose from the area around the tail light ,(this may give you a little trouble). Once you have done this, you will see three silver nuts. These must be unscrewed. The lower left nut must be accessed through a hole next to where the trunk lid fits. (The screws are permanently attached to the lens housing so will not drop into obscurity when the nuts are removed). After removing the nuts, GENTLY work the lens housing away from the car. You may need a screw driver to unseat the housing, but just be gentle.

You will find three bulbs inside the lens. The brake light bulb is on the lower right side. Simply pull the old bulb out and insert the new one.

Just reverse these directions to reassemble the housing.

Anyone know how to replace the third brake light on a 1999 windstar ?

Look on the inside of the liftgate and you'll spot a plastic trim panel/piece directly behind the High Mount brake light. Gently pry this piece off and you'll have access to the bulb and socket.
