My front strut needs replacing.

Most new struts come with diagram you can purchase just the strut or the complete assembly. Recommend complete assembly and replace both sides and have an front end alignment done after installation. If doing your self use caution with compression tool. This tool can also be rented at auto parts store.

Are you referring to the strut tower? Or the strut itself? If it's the tower, try a good salvage yard and find a proficient welder. If it's the strut, just buy a new one - welding a strut is not a real good idea.

The struts need to be replaced on my 93 accord. What all parts do I need?

Well, you need replacement struts, but you knew that...You need jack, jack stands (must have), wrenches to remove the bolts, and a spring compressor to remove the springs from the old struts and put on the new struts.
Also have upper bearings on hand, for the front struts. These allow pivot on some designs.

I have an 88 toyota corolla hatch and new struts are way too expensive. I would like to know the proceedure for repairing the existing struts.

removing, rebuilding, and replacing the struts would be more
expensive than installing new ones. buy new struts on ebay, quik struts if you can find them as they include new springs and upper mounts, then pay an alignment shop to put them in and align the car. you can save a few hundred bucks over a parts store or paying retail for the parts through a shop.

I need new struts. How much should it cost to replace them? Parts and labor? The guy at my local station said $978. Sounds very high. He also said there was something "cracked" that needed to be...

I see you replacing 2-struts at $75 each (parts coming from PepBoys, Advance Autoparts, etc).
Installation at $75 for each strut.
Total would be $300 for parts and labor.

Strut Questions for 2004 Alero

The bump stop will move up and down most time the first time you hit a big bump it will go up anyway.
As for the scratches they will shorten the life of the strut the scratches will wear at the internal seals in the struts and wear them out faster then normal. but they will be safe till this happens

Front spring

Raise and safely support the vehicle.
Remove the tire/wheel assembly.
Remove any brackets or sway bar endlinks that may be attached to the strut.
Remove upper strut mount bolts (NOT THE BIG ONE IN THE CENTER) Should be three bolts.
Remove two strut to knuckle bolts and remove the strut.
Remove the top nut of the strut.
Remove the spring noting how the strut mount and other parts are oriented.
Remove the spring compressor.
Compress the new spring and install the new spring with the strut mount and other parts in the same orientation as it was removed.
Reinstall the top nut.
The rest is opposite of removal.

As far as driving without having a front end alignment done AFTER the strut replacement, you should head to a shop and have a front end alignment done. You MAY notice some vibrating or tire wear if not taken care of.

Looking at your struts online, the boot comes with the struts. All you have to do is drop yours and replace with the new!

Strut mounting kit

I just did that a few weeks agon on my daughter's 2004 Stratus Sedan. Same passenger side rear! The original factory part was **** and fell to pieces. The new parts are greatly improved. Buy two (2) because you will need one for the other side in the near future.

You will need a coil spring compressor for this job, some metric wrenches/sockets, and something to hold the top stud of the Strut when you loosen the nuts. I think the nuts inside the trunk are 15 mm and the big one at the bottom of the strut is 18 mm.

Check out for a great exploded view of the entire strut top to bottom. Go to the Auto Zone Web site and look up your struts and print the inspection and repair/replacement topics. Check the strut closely before you decide to put it back in, particularly if they have a lot of miles on them. I plan to replace all four struts next summer on my daughter's car.

I reused the old strut, but you need to decide if it is a good time to put new struts on for yourself. This would be a great time to do it if you need them. Look closely at the rubber bushings at the top of the strut and buy a new set if they are not really solid. I bought new ones when I did it.

Start inside the trunk by pulling back the trunk liner to expose the top of the strut and mounting bolts for the broken bracket. Spray all the nuts/bolts at top and bottom of the strut with liquid wrench a few times. Remove the two (2) outside nuts first. You will need a special socket to hold the end of the strut stud while you turn the nut off. I used a big pair of Vice Grips on the flats, but use the socket if you can get one.

That big bolt & nut that attaches the bottom of the strut will take some effort to remove. Use the coil spring compressor to take the load off that bolt before you try to remove it. The suspension component to the left of that bolt will need to be unbolted and lowered for the strut bolt to be removed. Good Luck!
