Lexus SC400 fuel gauge problem

I have a Lexus SC400 that has had a wonky fuel gauge ever since I bought
the car. On filling the tank with gas to the pump cut-off, the needle
registers full but slides down to a 3/4 tank reading within about 15 miles.

If I continue to fill the car after the pump-shut off, I can still fill
more than a gallon without the tank overflowing, and the gauge behaves
like a normal car (stays at full for the next 50 miles).

Unfortunately, the gauge has completely ceased to operate and constantly
registers at empty right now. I'm guessing the problem is with the
fuel-sending unit but will have to take it for an unscheduled trip to the
dealer to confirm. The car has about 25,000 miles on it. Does anyone
know if this is a common problem with Toyota/Lexus?

-   I am driving a Lexus 92 sc400, I filled up the gas tank and drove about 20 miles, the fuel gauge needle went down to Half, after turning on the air conditioning, the needles would go down to a Quoter. The needle would go up to the Half after turning off the air conditioning. The needle would go up to 3/4 gauge while parking without turning on the air conditioning. I check the wire in the trunk, the wire was not loosened. Please advise what might be the problem. -   allenchangbi

go to the trunk and remove the back panel which is very easy and check the
wiring to the top of the gas tank where the sender unit is, you never know
it just might be a loose wire or connection, mick from england

G'day

A mate of mine has a Soarer (SC400) with a similar problem, only it affects
most of his dashboard (e.g. for the first 20KM or so half the dashboard
doesn't even come up, and sometimes with a full tank of fuel, going around a
left hand corner hard results in the fuel warning coming up
Says there is a crowd in Australia who can fix it, so I will enquire and let
you know what the answer is.
