I need new front rotors, need to know ball park how much to replace.

Replaced mine last weekend. At O'Reilley's Auto Parts, the rotors cost just under $40 each if you can install them yourself. Takes about an hour.

1989 Subaru GL Wagon, told I need both axels replaced and ball joints as well as brakes replaced, for $500.00. Is that too much?


That whole deals sounds fishy. Brake job should be about $100 depending on parts. That part about needing to replace axle to replace ball joints doesn't sound right. I've been a diesel mechanic for 30 yrs and bought, drove and fixed used cars a bunch. Not that specific one, but plenty of them. Get another opinion.

Front end shakes when braking


will try to help. when front wheels shake while applying brakes and you can feel shake in steering wheel, front brakes and rotors need replacement.rotors are warped,if you replace front brake pads, it will return[shaking when you apply brakes] suggest that you replace front rotors[both] replace [both]front brake pads. cost? i would charge [brake pads cost $55.00] labor,$60.00] total $115.00 thank you for choosing fixya.com

When I press on the brakes the car shakes a little, I can feel it in the steering wheel.


The front brake rotors are warped. Have front brakes checked and see how much pad is left. Some shops will offer to "turn the rotors". This means they will machine them. This is a quick fix. For the correct way is to replace them. Be careful where they get there rotors from. A cheaper auto parts store may carry them for less, but can also come warped from the manufacture. I would chose NAPA auto parts. I have better luck with them.

The steering wheel shakes when the brakes are applied


Possible front rotor are warp or rear drum are warp,
Also check front suspension for play in tie rod end or ball joint

Rotors keep warping. Parking brake=caliper sticking?


well first of all just because they can be turned dosent always mean that you should do it, now a days rotors are alot cheaper to just replace them, however whatch where you buy them. in most cases you get what you paid for, Like cheap rotor prices=less life, same for the pads and how hard the driver uses the pedal. and as for the "classic rotor warp" thats not always the case with these newer cars having more movable joints than ever befor, it could be, bad hub bearing,bad lower ball joint...etc....good luck

2004 Chrysler 300m has high pitched squeeling noise during low-speed turns. (parking lots, driveways). Had a power steering flush and had serpentine belt replaced with no improvement. 103,000 miles...


Sounds like the serpentine belt is slipping . Most likely you have a bad belt tensioner. Another possibility is your steering pump could be going out. Ball joints and tie rods make clunking or knocking sounds when they are bad.

Wheels bearing stuck rotors wont come off. Howdo Iget them off?


I hope you ready for some fun. I just did mine on the same car. first off DO NOT listen to the idiots on the internet. They are stuck for a reason. you can't just pull them off. unless you can bench press 4000 lbs. that is!!! you need to remove upper ball joints lower ball joints then steering arm. the whole hub assembly will then come off. this is assuming you already took the 36mm axle nut off. next remove the 4 bolts on the rear wheel bearing assembly. and take in to machine shop they will have to press out bearings so that you can replace your rotors. as long as your doing that you might as well have them put in new bearings at the same time. this is not a job you want to do again anytime soon. also I replaced the lower ball joints because my were somewhat bad. I am saving you a big headache here. they charged me 20 bucks per side for pressing bearings in and out and 20 more for pressing new ball joints in and out. new bearings cost me 40 per side. so all in all it cost me 300 bucks for everything. but at a shop ( I've already checked) this is a $750 job. Have fun!!!! At least you know you'll be saving money. by the way. the front axle nut is a 36mm torqued to 180ft.lbs. for your info. also wheel torque is 81 ft lbs.

Taking off front rotors


the easiest way is to take off the knuckle loosen the four wheel bearing bolts on the backside of the knuckle and leaving the socket on each bolt use an impact hammer to drive the bearing out then rotate the rotor 1/4 turn and it should pull off. . . you might have to clean up the rust on the bearing with a grinder so the rotor will come off... do NOT take the bearing apart you do not need to. many shops will do this but it is not needed and ruins the bearing as it is a sealed unit not designed to come apart. ( to take the knuckle out take off the caliper and undo the axle nut, top and bottom ball joint and the tie rod end)

Cv joint replacement


Remove the tire and tighten 2 lugnuts onto the brake rotor. remove the axle nut in center of the brake rotor and drive the axle out of the spindle. If the ball joint is original, you have to grind out the rivets on the lower control arm. Remove and replace the ball joint with the hardware included with the ball joint. Next, pry-unsnap the axle end from the transaxle with a prybay and drive-snap in the new axle shaft into the transaxle. reverse to assemle, align front end and wholla! your done. 1 hour,15 min. $115.00 to do it yourself.
