Question about 1993 Chevrolet C1500

93 1500 chey wants to wander , I replaced the pitman arm, ball joints are ok. Steering box seems OK. Could this be a steering drive shaft problem?

Could be. I had a blazer that would do that and it turned out to be the tie rod ends which will also make it wander.

95 All wheel drive Blazer It's hard steer , re-end locking. nd locking up and alost seems like the br. What would cause all this?


Start with the rear. Most likely a brake problem. 2 things to look at. First the emergency brake cable. Make sure the cable is kind of loose. If not it is locked/rusted and applying the brake. Gets worse as you drive. Cut them close to the brake or replace them. Next is the rear brake hose/s. To check this, if the brakes are tight, release one of the brake bleeder valves. If it releases the brakes, replace the hose. Hard steering could be the power steering pump or gear box, or bad ball joints. This you'll have to look at the steering linkage. Ball joints, pitman arm, idler arm. Any of these look really rusty at the connection. Could be a problem. Look at the steering shaft also. There is a u joint that rusts up and will cause hard spots when turning. Gear boxs usually get sloppy. Power steering pumps start to whine when going bad.

Check the steering intermediate shaft connection to the steering gear box, its slip shaft and the connection to the stering collumn. if those are ok, its probably slop in the steering gear box. Some of that can be adjusted out on the gear box by your mechanic. You will see either a flat head cut or hex head inset with a lock nut on the top of the gear box. Loosening hte lock nut and tightening the bolt to factory torque setting then releasing it the appropriate specified degress will reset the gear box back to factory settings. Beware if you set this wrong you will cause your steering to bind when turning. Therefore only let a qualified mechanic do this for you.

The most likely cause is a worn ball and socket (not the 'ball joint' on the suspension) on the Pitman arm for the steering linkage. The steering idler arm's ball and socket may also be worn. The parts are cheap, but it is a PITA to remove the Pitman arm. This can be checked by seeing how much steering wheel play you have before the wheels do anything. Looking at the Pitman arm while doing this may scare you. I drove with a bad one for ~1 year, and was always scared the ball was going to pop out of the socket and result in no steering.

Hello, Sir is your 1997 Ford Expedition a 4X4? It sounds like the drag line and it's ball joints.
There is a bent heavy steel arm at the end of steering box. On the end of this pitman arm is the drag link and the drag link is hook to each front hub with a ball joint on each end and the pitman arm. This way when the steering wheel is turning both wheels in the front will follow each other.
If the ball joint are wore out on the drag link this will cause the front wheels to wobble.

Need to get the Ford Exp off the ground where the front wheels are free of a load. Now, just grab one of the front wheels and move it back and forth. There a good possiblity it rattle like marble in a car.
Also, check the upper and lower control arms that attached to each front hub. There are hugh ball joint in each control arm, upper and lower on each of the Ford Exp. Two per side four all together.

Play in steering is compounded by each weakness, no matter how slight, that exists in the entire steering linkage.

I admire your technique in troubleshooting. You definitely make valid points with your observations.

However.... I like to save people from unnecessary expenses. If there is a possibility one or more ball joints are responsible, and you can check them yourself for the cost of one specialty tool (approx $15.00).....

The Pitman Arm, the Idler Arm, the steering knuckles...

A ball joint should be stiff as he!!. Holding one in your hand, you should only be able to swivel the threaded part with the greatest difficulty. Stiff. It's job is the efficient transfer of force, not to dampen it.

A ball joint that moves with the ease of a joystick is no good. It will move independent (admittedly a very short distance) of the arm it's attached to until it reaches it's full range. That's in each direction.

That's where most 'Play' comes from.

Now think about two or more BJ's doing the same thing at once. Then steering gets Sloppy.

There are several you need to check. And they really need to be separated to check them.

To do this, you will need a 'Ball Joint Separator'. They are sometimes called 'Pickle Forks'. Don't ask me why.

The tines are wedge shaped. After you remove the Ball Joint Nt, you slide the fork under the BJ as shown and hit it with a fairly heavy hammer to pop it free.

If the Ball Joint is loose, easy to move or spins, it needs to be replaced.

Check the ones on the tie rod ends, the pitman arm first.

If they are good, simply put them back.

I hope this will save you some hard earned cash.

While driving down the road my 88 chevy 1500 wants to swerve to the left and then to the right. I had the wheels balanced, and have put new shocks on the front. Any ideas?


Check ball joints and tie rod ends for play. Jack the truck up on the frame and try to move the wheel up and down for ball joints and side ti side for tie rod ends. Also make sure you check the idler arm on passenger side and pitman arm on steering box. None of the parts should any play whatsoever. If there is any play in them when you try to move them then replace them.
There could also be excessive play in the steering box but that shouldn't make it swerve back and forth. That would just let it wander to one side or the other until you corrected it by turning the wheel. Hope this helps.

raise the truck and have some one rock the steering wheel back and forth while you look for excessive movement at the idler arm - also check is the input shaft on the steering gear box rotating more than the output(pitman arm side) i've seen more steering box failure in the last several years especially true with big tires or boggy road driving, a rebuilt box can be bought at a local parts store- o'reillys, advance, napa etc.

Cannister is your steering box...arm is the pitman arm. check to see if there is a thick alignment spline on either the arm or box. This locates the arm in the correct position. If not center the steering wheel(turn all the way to one side and count turns all the way to other side and divide in half for example, three turns from one side to the other side = 1 1/2 turns to center) and put both front wheels straight ahead, then install arm onto box. It is far easier to put it back than it was to remove.

Replacing ball joints on 1994 2500 silverado pick up plus replacing pittman rod


You will have to get a couple of tools for this job, a "pickle fork" and a pitman arm puller. You may be able to rent or borrow, but you should be able to buy them for about $80. They come in handy. To do the ball joints, jack up the truck and block it. With the wheel off remove the big nut on the inside of the spindle. Wedge your pickle fork between the spindle and control and give it a few belts with a hammer until the ball joint comes outof the spindle. Don't be shy with the hammer. Next you remove the ball joint from the control arm. IT may be riveted or bolted. Grind the rivets off, with a mini grinder. Bolt the new ball joint into the control arm tight and put it back in the spindle. Tighten up the big nut. If you are using a socket or box end wrench when you can't turn it any more it should be tight enough,put your shoulder into it when you tighten. Do your ball joints one at a time. You can use this procedure to remove the pitman arm from the center link. To remove the pitman arm from the steering box, remove the nut first. Hook up your puller making sure it is centered on the steering box shaft and straight with the angle of the box. Tighten the center bolt. When it gets hard to turn with your wrist give the bolt a sharp rap with a hammer. REpeat this until the pitman arm comes off. Put the new one on,they are usually made so that they will only go on in one position on the steering box. Make sure you before you tighten it that you didn't put it on upside down. When you sure it's on right tighten it up. Itshould return to a similar position on the steering shaft as the old one you took off. Reconnect the other end to the center link. Make sure you grease whatever you replace, and get your truck aligned as soon as possible, or your tires will start to wear funny.
