Question about Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Well I have done a complete tune up on my 96 Grande Cherokee then it started stalling on me any where and at any time, sometimes it would start right away sometimes 3 hours later or the next day!! so we started trying everything that we've read on here oh and no error codes. We just changed the cranksensor and now it won't start at all?? but it was starting before that they say there's no spark to the coil? and it's been that from the begining the dealer has ruled out all they say except the computer . They want to replace it for just under a 1000.00 because only they can flash it and it's best to use there's which is just under 700.00!! I've already put six hundred into it not including the tune up. We tested the pump and it primes at 40 but dies out to nothing whenturning over?? Frustrated!!! Please help me Colleen

Before you buy a NEW computer I would find one from a junk yard. WAY cheaper and they're fairly easy to change yourself. You'll want to be specific when looking for the computer to make sure it"ll match your vehicle ( options, engine type etc). You could save a ton of money that way. Plus if that isn't it, you can probably return the computer to the junkyard. If there's no spark to the coil then it is either as bad battery cable or the computer in my opinion. I own a 93 cherokee so I know what it's like

Sorry positive wire and that never worked either

can you ask the dealer what the vin # being burned into the computer has to do with anything? I don't know of anything that could be affected by a number. The only thing I can think of is that it could be burned for that exact vehicle which also seems a little odd. Best of luck too ya!

So the dealership said that the Vin# was burned in for this exact vehicle!! and the reason so only they can work on it!! I was hoping there would be a way around it and they said it's because it has a security feature?? I think there must be away past this and without having to buy a new computer?

my Husband is wondering if the altenator could have anthing to do with this problem? I have a brand new battery in it and I can't turn it over lots without it dieing?

  • polock28 Sep 11, 2010

Well the only thing I can think of to do is shop around at diferent dealerships to try and find the best price. They do compete. Also I know that there are performance shops that burn computers for performance and it doesn't cost as much as you're being quoted. Maybe one of those types of places can help. It makes me sick to think that they plan more on how to **** money out of you after the sale then they do on keeping quality in thier vehicles. Sorry I couldn't help more.
