My 1987 Monte Carlo SS...Hesitates when you take off and has a surge when
your driving at highway speed.. I have a mechanic put in on his
diagnostics but he could not figure out why it would throw the same code
everytime. We replaced the fuel filter and EGR valve and the oxygen
sensor...It has had a major tune up and the filters replacedThe
mechanic suggested that the computer needs replaced. I'm not sure..It has
had some carborator problems in the past. The sensor in the carb has been
changed tooAny advice? This car has a 305 HO in it.

Thanks Texa

-   I start my MC SS 87 and it runs for 5 seconds and then it dies slowly without backfire or hesitations: if I tries to accelerate during this symptom it makes nothing. Have you some ideas about this?

-   I have a 2001 Monte Carlo SS that surges intermittingly. It does it sometimes on grades and sometimes level road. I have had the transmission fluid changed and flushed. It has never sliped. It just surges and is doing it more frequently. I have had it on a diagnostic machine and they can't find the problem-   vicaircraft

This could be caused by a number of things. First, check for a restricted
catalatic converter. A clogged cat. will cause the EGR valve to
malfuntion. To test, just disconnect the vacuum hose to the EGR valve.
Next, check for eratic torque converter lockup. The test -- while driving
around 45mpg, don't let up on the gas and touch the brakes just enough to
make the converter disengage -- see if quits surging?

If the EGR, cat, and TCC check out ok, check for a rich carburator mixture.
Also, the hesitation could be the boost pump in the carb. Have the carb
rebuilt by a qualified technician. The ECM, computer, usually doesn't
cause this type of problem.

try looking at the air horn on the carb... if it is working it will move...opening up the choke after start.. if not the choke wont open..if so replace it.if choke opens up you might need to adjust it. this is asuming that your fast idle cam is set properly too. remember that when you first start your car when cold it needs to idle up and also bypasses the computer( open loop closed loop bla bla bla) so you might need to adjust your air fuel ratio too. the ccc carbs is factory set so dont adjust nothing ecept the two bottom screws at the base of the carb.if they are still plugged then more than likely they r still factory set.. so dont mess with them either. basicly if it is not your air horn then u have a gummed up carb and u need to get a basic carb kit from your local autoparts store... carb # is more than likely 7129(written on the carb) you can get a code key at autozone too... a little 2 prong key that when plugged in will make the check engine light blink a set amount of times.. it will blink once then twice.. 3 times in a row... that is code 12 meaning that your computer is working properly... then it will blink other times depending on what the problem is ... mine was barometric pressure sencer and the throttle position senser on the carb...but again when you first start your car it is cold and bypasses the computer so i dont think the computer is an issue here...i guess it would matter if i knew what code it was throwing... bottom line is if someone cant fix the carb right the first time they dont know what they r doing or they r trying to squeeze money out of u.... pick up a rochester q jet book at barns and noble and do these miner adjustments yourself...that book along with the key from autozone to plug into the prongs under your ashtray u aught to be able to disifer your codes and change out the sensers u need to....
