Question about 1986 Ford F150 SuperCab

1 Answer

I just purchased a 86 XLT and noticed it did not have a belt going from the alternator to the main engine pulley; it only had one to the smog pump, i've tried several belts but none seem to be the right size although they were recommended; do you have pics of the engine layout?

Hi, all belts sold are half an inch bigger then the smallest. if you have a 13 inch next size up 13 and and half. the alternator will adjust from 13 inch to 14 inch these have a adjustable bracket 2 bolts on the bottom and 1 on the top usually. if you slacken the bolts and take a lenth of the space with a peice of cord and get the nesrest to this. i am not saying you need this size. gerry

sure thing.... quotes.

1:REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER NO.1
2. REMOVE THROTTLE BODY COVER
3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE (-) BATTERY TERMINAL
4. DISCONNECT INTAKE AIR CONNECTOR FROM THROTTLE BODY
5. REMOVE DRIVE BELT
Loosen the belt tension by turning the belt tensioner counterclockwise, and remove the drive belt.
The pulley bolt for the belt tensioner has a left hand thread.
{that means liftytighty-rightyloosy or backwards}

6:REMOVE PS VANE PUMP FROM ENGINE
it's not smog; its steering. see below. vane.

7. REMOVE GENERATOR
  • Disconnect the generator connector.
  • Remove the terminal cap and nut, and disconnect the generator wire.
  • Disconnect the wire clamp from the cord clip on the generator.
  • Remove the bolt, the 2 nuts and the generator.

then, sigh.... the vane pump removal

VANE: the P/s is a vane type oil pump, for steering assist.
1. REMOVE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY WITH AIR CLEANER HOSE
  • Disconnect the MAF meter connector.
  • Disconnect the hoses.
  • Remove the clamp.
  • Remove the 3 bolts and air cleaner assembly with air cleaner hose connected.
2. REMOVE DRIVE BELT

V-belt routing for a Chev 454 (7.5l) engine

This is the routing diagram for a 454 engine using v-belts only, not a serpentine belt.
The following abbreviations are used :
  • C - Crankshaft
  • S - Smog pump (A.I.R.) system
  • W/P - Water Pump
  • Alt - Alternator / Generator
  • A/C - Airconditioner
  • P/S - Power steering(In some installations also includes the brake booster pump)
This particular setup is most prevalent in motorhomes. Refer to the diagram.
Diagram 1 is for the first groove on the crank(closest to the block), and utilizes the 1st groove on the power steering.(belt no : 15415)
Diagram 2 is for the 2nd crank groove and utilises the 1st groove on the water pump pulley, the A/C pulley and the 2nd groove on the P/S pulley.(belt no 15590)
Diagram 3 is for the 3rd groove on the crank

If your motorhome uses a serpentine belt it replaces the belt in track number 3. (serpentine belt no : 6K560)
The upper smog pump(not shown in diagrams) is powered from the powersteering (Hydraboost) pulley (V-belt no : 15450)

How do I replace the serpentine belt on a 1999 Kia Sephia?

1.8L Engine
  1. Using a belt tension gauge, measure the drive belt tension and compare with the following specifications:
    1. Alternator belt (new): 86-103 lbs. (383-461 N)
    2. Alternator belt (used): 68-86 lbs. (304-383 N)
    3. A/C compressor and power steering pump belt (new): 110-132 lbs (491-589 N)
    4. A/C compressor and power steering pump belt (used): 95-110 lbs. (422-491 N)

Fig. Using a tension gauge to measure the alternator belt tension - 1.8L engines (click HERE for zoom)

  2. Using the deflection method, apply moderate pressure (about 22 lbs) halfway between the pulleys, and compare with the following specifications.
    1. Alternator belt (new): 0.31-0.35 in. (8-9mm)
    2. Alternator belt (used): 0.35-0.39 in. (9-10mm)
    3. A/C compressor and power steering pump belt (new): 0.31-0.35 in. (8-9mm)
    4. A/C compressor and power steering pump belt (used): 0.35-0.39 in. (9-10mm)
  3. If the specifications fall outside the ranges given, adjust the belt as follows:
    1. Loosen the alternator mounting bolt and adjusting bolt.
    2. Adjust the alternator to get the specified belt deflection.
    3. Tighten the bolts, then recheck the tension.

Need to know what a pully is

a pulley is what guides the belt around the power steering pump, alternator, a/c pump, smog pump. you also have tensioner pulleys and idler pulleys all of them are ran by your'e belt.

I need a picture of the front of a 1999 silverado truck engine i may have apulley missing and i cant tell if i do or dont

must tr should have
  • Alternator pulley
  • Water pump pulley
  • Power steeringpump pulley
  • crankshaft pulley
serpentine belt idler/ tensioner pulley
Smog pump if equiped.
Any pulley missing will be real obvious. If you are replacing the serp belt and it seems too longm, compare with old belt or check routing diagram on top of radiator or on underside of hood. Can't say it can't happen, but pulleys don't comr off very easily or often. If belt tensioner spring fails, yoo much slack in belt occurs. good luck

Squealing Smog Control Belt in Humid Climate

I will list some of my experiences with similar problems.

V-belt quality and grade vary a lot and I do mean a lot. Belts can take a set from sitting--anybody with a table saw will attest to this. I would try a new belt first after finding a good parts man. A good alternator shop (rare today) can help here. The smog pump belt is an easy one to change. Try the cheap stuff first.

Smog pumps in my experience do not need a lot of power, especially at idle, but I have had bearing and pump failure on several wipe out a belt. Pull the belt and spin the smog pump by hand.

Belts can glaze and it is not necessarily noticeable. Stamped-steel pulleys polish smooth and won't transmit the power needed. Pulleys can also wear in some strange shapes so a new belt does not fit properly. See if an alternator shop has a cast iron pulley for the alternator. Cast iron does not polish smooth and also wears off any glaze from the belt surfaces. The crank pulleys are stamped-steel but are larger in diameter with a longer wrap angle so slippage is not a problem there.

In my poor days I tried sanding the belts and pulleys to remove the glaze. Too much work and it was only temporary.

I have used a cast iron pulley on a 110 amp alternator with a winch load. A stamped-steel pulley would just smoke the belt when under load (winch drew 225 amps total!). My truck is 70 amp and that is the biggest alternator Ford has with a V-belt that I know of.

I considered removing my smog pump and associated hardware. My experience has been to leave everything intact unless I can replace everything with an earlier, non-smog engine. Doing everything piecemeal has just caused other problems.

Hope this helps.

Noisy water pump pulley, alternator pulley..timing belt tensioner

I have a 1995 xj6....same problem. I replaced the belts, water pump, and the alternator. Still does it. As I play with the tension on the belt (belt that drives water pump, alternator) it goes away and comes back. If I remove the belt, the metal to metal screech stops. I then, with just the belt, turned the main pulley on the front of the engine, and there was the sound! The main pulley has 2 belts that run on it. Also, 2 pulley tracks. They SHOULD move simultaneously and be super meshed. But the rear one moves on its own under tension until it warms up and I guess, the bushing maybe expands. Now.....how do I fix it??????
