Question about 2004 Ford Explorer
More then likely it is the alternator that is bad, or a slipping belt. the voltage at battery with car off should be about 13 volts or a bit higher. while running, voltage at battery should be at or about 14.2 volts.

Two things, 1- check and make sure the drive belt did not come off. 2- need to do an elec. check, if belt is ok, then more then likely the alternator has gone bad, if you can jump start your engine, check voltage at battery with engine running and jumper cable's remove, with volt meter check voltage at battery, that will be alternator out out voltage, should not have less then 13 volt's, if less, bad alternator, replace it.

The factory security light will remain on - this is a standard feature indicating the car is dead.
First, unplug the hazard fuze in the engine bay (this will reset the ecu and remove the flashing)
Next, replace the battery with a new one (or one with proper charge) - keep in mind a small battery will not do anything for these cars, the engines require a lot to push them over (it isnt a honda)
*Make sure to clean the positive and negative battery cables from acid
Then just start it up :)

SOURCE: i lost my key to
Your ignition takes a specific key, they are chipped. If the ignition was changed and the decoder wasn't , this is the problem. You may be able to call a dealer ship and give the VIN number and get the measurement in ohms of the chip, Maybe. Then go to a hard ware store and they can duplicate the key you have with a chip key. Be prepared , this is not a $2.00 key
