Question about Ford Taurus

I have a 2002 Taurus SES flex fuel car. Can I just put ethanol in the tank after using regular fuel?

    Thank you for the quick reply. I am going to fill up with e85 today and save myself about .50 a gallon!

This question is asked very often. Since e85 is already a mixture of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline, it is just fine to mix the two fuels.

Let's say that you fill up with e85 before a trip then continue to your destination. When you are ready to leave, you notice there are no e85 stations around. You have less then half a tank left of e85, and you need to fill up. Filling up your tank with regular gas is just fine for your flex fuel vehicle.

Filling up will regular gas will only dilute the e85 ethanol from the original fill up. With a rough calculation, if you have half a tank of e85 and fill up with regular gas, you will have approximately 40 percent ethanol and 60 percent gasoline in your tank.

If your vehicle is a flex fuel vehicle, it will be able to take any combination of e85 and gasoline.

Ethanol blend gasoline causes issues with older vehicles.

I've answered many questions recently about older vehicles (pre-2005) having fuel system issues. As a car collector, I have encountered fuel system issues myself, almost all of which stem from the use of ethanol blend fuels, such as E10.
Whereas vehicles manufactured in the past ten years are specifically designed to accommodate a broad variety of fuels (especially "Flex Fuel" vehicles), ethanol poses a special problem to older vehicles.
  • Many vehicles manufactured more than a decade ago use fuel tanks that will rust in the presence of moisture. Ethanol fuels, when allowed to sit for extended periods in conditions where heat and humidity are high, catalyze moisture to condense at the top of the gas tank, eventually collecting on the sides and bottom of the gas tank when the temperature again falls, causing rust spots to develop throughout the tank.
  • Most engine computer controls that are over a decade old are not equipped to deal with the peculiar sensor readings caused by ethanol blend fuels, causing the fuel mixture to be made richer than necessary, and retarding the timing to avoid pinging. This notably lowers performance and fuel economy.
  • Carbureted engines with older carburetors may experience a gelatinous buildup in the float bowl, which may eventually clog the metering jets. This gelatine-like buildup is residue from water combining with other contaminants in the fuel system, and isn't permanently harmful, but can cause misfiring and loss of performance.
  • Use of ethanol blend gasoline in older cars can cause permanent harm to components of the fuel system, including the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel injectors.
  • Change your fuel filter regularly, and be certain that your fuel pickup strainer does not become clogged with rust particles. (If your variable speed fuel pump is constantly operating at high speed, this is a good indication that your pickup strainer is clogged);
  • If your fuel has been sitting in the tank for more than one year without being used or added to, GET RID OF IT and replace it with fresh fuel. NOTE: If you buy a car that shows evidence of sitting idle for an extended period, even on a used car lot, expect to replace the fuel, first thing.
  • Use a FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER additive with every two or three fill-ups. Use with every fill-up if your vehicle sits for longer than a month at a time.
  • Use a FUEL SYSTEM WATER REMOVER (sometimes called "FUEL SYSTEM MOISTURE REMOVER") at least four times per year. (WARNING: This may cause the above-described gelatinous slime to develop if you have water in your fuel system. Fear not, if you have a fuel-injected engine, the gelatinous gunk will pass through the system eventually, to be burned in the cylinders or ultimately expelled from the exhaust);
  • IF POSSIBLE, USE NON-ETHANOL FUEL IN ALL OLDER VEHICLES. It costs more and, in some areas, is not available. In this case, the introduction of a METHANOL-BASED fuel additive may help, and fuel system water remover additives are essential.

Is 93 Eagle Summit flex fuel?

I wouldn't think so. Flex fuel was developed after the car was built.
You could check with Chrysler or Mitsubishi to make sure.

auto tech for 15 years you have a crack on the fuel pump return line on the fuel pump assemble I have done many Taurus with the same problem the fuel puddles up on top of the tank and smells bad replace the whole fuel pump assemble and the smell will go away.

The government mandated 10% ethanol in all gasoline fuel sold for automobiles, so You have to use ethanol blended fuel just about everywhere. That blend is suppose to go up to 15% shortly.

This is the first report of a vehicle that has an ethanol tank and a fuel tank and the mix is done by the ECM
The problem with ethanol is that it is hygroscopic ( absorbs moisture from the air) and that creates problems with water in the fuel and equipment
any mixture adjustments will be done by the ECM after it receives the exhaust gas content from the heated oxygen sensors in the exhaust manifold before the cat converter ( different operation to an oxygen sensor(O2S)
flooding has nothing to do with the flex plate as that is just a flywheel to carry the ring gear and to drive the torque converter.
the need to hold the rpms so high is an indicator of an air/fuel mix and that is the area to concentrate your efforts

You normally can find the diagram on a sticker on the underside of the hood directly above the alternator on a 3.0 OHV motor 2002 Ford Taurus. I copied one from the Internet and taped it above the headlight on my car so it was easier to view and use. Try some SEAFOAM carb / injector cleaner, Just put into the gas tank, and also fill up with some supreme gas. This might clean up your problem.
Oh, what about a tune-up, spark plugs, rotor button, Distributor cap, & plug wires. This should top everrything off to rum smooth.

In 2004,Ford had a flex fuel vehicle that would allow you to put regular fuel or fuel with up to 10 percent ethanol. I don't think they intended it to run on 100 percent ethanol.You can access the website, there is a technical section where you can post the same question. Good Luck
