Problem for Peugeot 1983 505

Lying fuel gauge and bouncy speedo on 93 405 sri

By Duke - usenet poster

" "
Car's a 1993 Peugeot 405 2.0 litre SRI, the fuel gauge doesn't seem to have
a clue as to how much fuel is in the tank and wanders all over the dial
whether full or near empty, thank heavens for the wee orange light, question
is, is this likely to be the tank sender unit or the voltage stabiliser
(which on other cars is usually behind the instrument panel, not sure about
this one), anyone else experience this?

The speedo dances around as well meaning I don't get a reasonable reading,
the tyres (and wheels I guess) were changed by the previous owner and are
now 195x15x65's, question is, are the wheels/tyres a possible cause or is
there something else I should be looking at, maybe a stripped speedo gear or
something?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi,
I have a similar problem in my car, a 1983 505 GR (Australian model). The
fuel guage drops by 1/4 of a tank under heavy acceleration, but then returns
to normal when cruising. Also, the needle never goes all the way up to full,
so that means the guage will read empty by about 250kms, however I can keep
driving until the car has done about 480km. I've never run it down to the
orange light (I don't trust it). Any ideas?

thanks.

Dancing speedo: The problem is in the speedo itself. There is some
lubrication inside that has the tendency to get stiff with time and speedo
gets kinda hard to turn. This is possible to fix with some cleaning and
lubrication, and it should be fixed before cable get broken or gears
stripped.

Wonder how many others are running round with weird fuel gauge readings,
mine seems to have no particular (that I can see) pattern, car is off the
road now due to it suddenly developing a running on 3 cylinders syndrome as
well as the clutch bearing going, think I should have saved my money 3 weeks
ago :-(

Thanks for that, as you probably saw in my other reply, I have much more
pressing problems with it but I will eventually get round to having a go at
that, thanks very much for the info!

Same happens on my mates 309sr and the fuel gauge on my Astra has never told
the truth since new, so it's probably normal.

Not normal to me. While my fuel guage ('89 405 estate 1.9 carb version) may
be off a liter or 3-4 max, but it's very consistent. I know how far down I
can go up to 10 kms.
Sorry I can't help you with your question as to why this happens.

Thanks for the reply anyway, my guess with the fuel gauge is the
regulator/stabiliser which is a relatively common fault on many makes, I'm
just about to scrap an old Audi today which had the same fault, very easy to
fix on that, not sure about this though, a further delve into the Haynes
manualmight help locate it (though I doubt it) ;-).

Thanks again

Thanks michael but I'd rather have a clue and get it fixed though, all my
previous cars I've had a good idea of what was in the tank even if the thing
read off slightly but not with this, I ferry my kids around and would hate
to be stuck in the utter reaches of Scotland and out of juice on a Sunday
morning ;-)

Sorry about the capital "M" missing, was a keyboard error, not a human one,
missing it before posting was though, sorry! :-(
