ummm
no?

Is that coming from personal experience or from something you read? What
kind of things "always go-out"?

VR6 cars cost alot to maintain, stupid little things always go-out (break?)
on them... so make sure you have some money left after you buy the car in
case something comes up.

My 95 GTI VR6 which just turned 43K - I bought it new - has been fantastic -
no major problems and very few minor ones. Maybe your experience has been
mostly with the earlier VR6s or with high mileage examples, but so far, mine
has been quite trouble-free and inexpensive to maintain - front brakes/rotors
at 30K, serpentine belt and belt tensioner at 40K, ground cable at 41K. No
engine issues at all - just regular 3K oil/filter. But I don't pound the crap
out of it, either. YMMV, I guess.

Hello:

Did you really need your rotors changed at 30k or just machined? Also, do you
mind telling me how much you paid for the "serpentine" belt and belt tensioner?
I have a feeling mine needs a few new belts.

thanx,'

Personal experience, 93 passat glx vr6. Let's see, the whole coolant system
went to shit, had to replace heatercore, thermostat & thermostat housing;
still have coolant leaks. Rotors warped to hell, whole car shakes when I
brake. Starter went out, had to replace that. The ignition is dead, have
to use a toggle switch (that the previous owner installed) to start the car.
The odometer is electronic and went out, so now my '93 car says it only has
23k miles when in reality it has 78k miles. Shift knob broke off, oh ya and
the car eats oil ( I use mobile 1 trisynthetic 10w-30 and I check the oil
after about 2k miles and its over a quart low)

These are just a few of my "personal experiences" and things that "go-out"

have a good day and good luck on the VR6.

oh ya the vR6 likes to guzzle gas so consider that in this day when Gas
prices are jacked up.

My 98 GTI VR6 has behaved quit well, I would follow all schedule
maintanence and you will see great quality. NOTHING has gone wrong
only squeaky loud breaks at times from the hard carbon-metallic brakes

great car that constanly embarrases people who don't respect my
hatchback and nothing but, heads turned from cops who can't believe
that a little hatchback passwed them at 100mph
a great car , great speed, great performance, great german engineering
w/o the bmw over price btw , I have wipped several 323i's ;-)

peace,
-b

I would agree about the going to shit thing, and it happens to be on Passats
too. Mine and my moms has had all the hoses, the thermostat housing, and the
heatercore. My dad also just did the electric water pump on my moms. Also her
cluster is completely shot, only the tac and fuel guage work, it still leaks
water from somewhere, and leaks oil. Mine needs an oil cooler, leaks oil like
mad and i just ordered all the engine mounts because I can move it all over the
place and it sits crooked. My dad also also done one driveshaft assembly and
both wheel bearing up front. And the waterpump on my moms broke apart and
jammed it which locked up the belt and snapped it. I am also doing some side
job work one someones 93 Passat, same as mine and my moms. I just did the
heater core, he did the electric pump and I will be doing the other waterpump
soon too. Oh and my moms needed a distributor, and a fuel pump, which also
need a new sending unit since they decided to change the design.

All this stuff with my moms car is whithin the last 9 monthes or so and the car
only has 120K miles, we think since the odometer stopped working.

so I would have to say that some of the early VR6s are shit. I still love the
car though and would not give it up for anything right now.

Well, my experiences are quite different. My '97 GTI VR6 has been utterly
perfect. Just like my Mom's VR6 Jetta.
I've actually had three VR6 cars, and haven't had a problem on any of them.
My current Green VR6 GTI has over 34k miles, not easy ones either. Add the
extra weight of 300 pounds of competition audio components, and this thing
ROCKS!

Oh yea, it is also much faster than my '76 Rolls Royce, and uses A LOT less
gas/oil.

Just my two cents worth!
