I have a 1995 BMW M3 and I have replaced the stock receiver with a top of
the line Sony CD changer and controller. The radio and tape work ok except
the sound is very low. I have to turn it up almost all the way to get any
kind of good sound. Does anyone know if there is a gain of something on
the BMW amp that needs to be adjusted?
Also I get no sound from the CD changer. I took the output from the changer
and plugged into another radio and got sound. So it seems that when I plug it
into the receiver I get nothing. Any idea as to what's wrong?

The BMW factory amplifier expects high-level inputs, not line-level
inputs. In my M3 I used a speaker- to line-level converter from
Crutchfield. If you truly have a top of the line deck, though, it won't
not have the speaker-level outputs used by the converter. In that case
you *might* be able to use a line driver.
It isn't very easy to integrate aftermarket components with BMW's system.
The results aren't particularly rewarding, either. You might want
to consider replacing the amp and the speakers as well. The amp and
speakers must be replaced all at once, however...

I'd take it to the shop you got it from and ask them to check it out. It's possible
that the inputs for the CD changer are blown/bad.
