Question about 1998 Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

The car will sometime refuse to take off. It sounds like its running on about 2 cylinders. If I let it idle at 3000 rpm for about 5 minutes it will run fine for about 2 weeks to a month then this problem happends again. When taking off it has NO power and will die out. but if I idle it for 10 minute at 3000 rpm it will drive perfectly and this problem has been happenabout4 4 times... Could it be the cadilitic converter? Please help

RPM's go high when driving but then go back to normal

What you are describing sounds normal. RPM's stand for revolutions per minute. Each minute your engine is running, the pistons are going up and down. When you are not going anywhere, your engine is idling and so the RPM's should NOT be very high. However, when you race up a hill, your RPM's SHOULD be high because your engine has to work hard to climb the hill or to go fast.
Idle speed= 650 Revolutions Per Minute. That means your engine cylinders each work 650 times in One minute.
At freeway speeds, your engine will revolve somewhere between 1600 and 2100 times per minute. I hope that helps.

new subaru enigne. NO YEAR stated !!!!!!

the cold start RPM is wrong.
its NOT THE ENGINE. !!!
the engine controls are out of control.
vacuum air leaks are the reason.
or stuck open ISC /iAC air valve .
or throttle cable set too tight,
of the many. i can find it in 5min flat hands on.
but telling how to find air leaks is a 20 page doc.
you contradicted , idles find then 3000 rpm idle.
which is it.?

that tacho meter is x1000
so 3 x 1000 is 3000 RPM.. all cars
and is 2 times the legal idle.
and 3 times hot. 800 is normal hot
0.8 on the dial zero point eight. = 800

Hi guys...my yaris is running rich, has poor gas mileage (360km on a full tank). and very slow and choppy idle (idles like a really old car) these are the things i have done so far : change air and fu

Do the following:
1. Clean the throttle body from inside.
2. Adjust the spark plugs gap to 1.00 mm.
3. Check fuel pump pressure. (44 Psi - 49 psi)
4. Remove the negative battery terminal for 5 minutes.
5. Connect the battery terminal.
6. Check the engine oil level and coolant level.
NOTE: Before starting the engine shut off all lights and loads for example room light, blower, radio, parking light etc.
7. Start the engine and hold the throttle at 3000 rpm till radiator fan comes on.
8. After the fan comes on release the throttle pedal and let it idle for 10 minutes.

Idles at 3000 rpm

Your problem seems to be the "Idle control unit" It controls the idle control valve. The box is sometimes green or black and is located in the glove box ceiling next to the ECU. It's approx 4" x 6"in size.

Service light has come on. Engine idles at 3000 RPM at one time then at 500 RPM at another. When at 500 RPM sounds like it is missing and sometimes stalls.
