Could anyone tell me where I can get a copy of a BMW 7 series workshop manual for less than ??70 which is all I can find on the net. it has to cover 1988 British model.
-   I have a 1985 735i that I just rebuilt the transmission, or rather replaced the governor and a clutch pack. I just put it back in but now it will not start. I bought this car from a friend who bought it at an auction. We don't know anything about it except when purchased, it ran but only reverse worked. Now it will not start. It does turn, but not start. I also smell gas whenever I try to start it.

Hi Mark,
I think you are going to struggle to find a manual, as the usual manual publishers don't think your average BMW owner is going to do their own servicing. I got the Haynes manual for the 5 series, as the engine, transmission, most of the running gear and a lot of the body work are the same. I also got the American Chiltons book, which covers the bits that the Haynes doesn't. The only info I am missing now is an accurate wiring diagram. Nearly all of the problems I have experienced have involved the electrics, but without good info, the wiring is a nightmare.
Hope this helps

The 1988 7-series has the E32 BMW model designation.
IMO, the Bentley manuals are the most practical and the best for DIYers. The British RHD model should make little difference except perhaps you should view some of the photos using a mirror(!).
Many US mail order outfits carry them. Bavarian Auto has them for sure. I bought one as X'mas gift to my brother-in-law last year.
US$ 104.95 plus shipping. Try the URL below - they have a photo of it.

The Bentley in my view has shortcomings and is not really worth the price asked for it new. I have seen some sold second hand at around the ??35- ??40 mark and at that price it would be a good buy. By all accounts they also show up on Ebay.
Really, if money is a critical factor then the Haynes 5 series manual is a fairly good compromise (depending on exactly what work is being done) then reference sought at various E32 boards and sites which will give the necessary guidance necessary for virtually any problem and repair.
