My vehicle: 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser Engine: 1FZ-FE 4.5 litre Inline 6 cylinder
Symptom: Twice in the same day vehicle stalled with blown 15A EFI fuse driving at speed (60-70mph) with foot off gas. Several other times during the same day vehicle stalled with foot off gas - but no blown EFI fuse. Vehicle would reliably stall unless I kept some pressure on the gas pedal. Then the problem seemed to go away except idle is still a little rough and vehicle behaves a little strangely at times (acceleration is not smooth, occasional small lurches).
I'm thinking it is one (or a combination) of three things: A. Bad Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) B. Bad Fuel Pump C. Clogged Fuel Filter
If it was just the stalling I'd think only the TPS is the problem but I'm not sure why I've gotten the blown fuses. Any tips on which of the three things above, or any other things, that may be causing the problem would be much appreciated.
-   Yep. O2 sensor wire harness shorting against the front driveshaft. Just fixed it. This thread helped to isolate the problem quickly. Thanks Jessie25, you are the man.
Reguarding the efi fuse, their is a problem with some of the cruisers blowing this fuse because the wire feeding it is too small. It gets hot, causing higher resistance and current draw.Has to be an older unit, the wire breaks down from the heat cycling.I believe the wire is 16 gauge ,it needs to be replaced with a 12-14 guage wire from the fuse to the first wire splice in the harness. The wire to the splice is 12 gauge. You may want to take it to a toyota dealer for this. They may or may not know about this fix, show them this message from a certified Toyota tech who has done this repair.good luck

Ian, none of the above, you have a shorted wire harness in the rear of the engine by the EGR pipe, it has melted through and a wire is now shorted to ground. Of course, it could be a zillion different things, but I doubt it. Do let us know what you find, oh, dont overlook the O2 sensor wires melted to the exhaust, but the above is likely. ;-)

Ian, sorry to change the subject a bit but how do you like the truck. I'm negotiating to buy a 1994, just over 100k miles, but torn between that and paying over 2x for a 1998 with the new style/powerplant. Have you found the 1994 to be reliable? It has all the features I need, just wondering if I'd be better off with the newer one. I'm not looking at this as a day to day driver, just for hauling stuff, space for two big dogs, and use in bad New England weather.
Thx.

I had the same problem, turned out to be the O2 sensor wire shorting out - taped it up, problem went away. Good luck Andrew

Hell, for the money saved over the 1998, you can install either the TRD supercharger, or get the Safari Tubo, and laugh as you blast by the 98's on the freeway!!!! The Land Cruisers motors are very long lived. I wouldn't hesistate to buy a Cruiser with 100,000 - 200,000 miles on it if the service was done properly, and in a timely fashion.
For the money differeance between a 94 and a 98 you can do some pretty wicked things to the truck, such as the mentioned super or turbo. OME suspension, ARB bumpers front and rear, roof rack, all kinds of cool stuff.

Hey thanks for the advice. Just looked at the TRD site, looks like they only offer the supercharger for 1995 and newer Cruisers. Any idea why they don't offer the supercharger on the 1994? I'm just curious what's different about the 1994 engine?

Depending on where you are, there could be twelve valves difference.

I think this has something to do with the air cleaner. It is in fact possible to install the supercharger into a 93/94, but a few modifications are required. Check out http://www.sleeoffroad.com for some more details, or give them a call.

I had the engine fully reconditioned (3.0 litre turbo diesel, with auto) but it over heats on long upward runs on hills. If I turn the heater onto full it will stop the over heating. I have had the radiator out and checked twice. The termostat is an after market one. The fuel injectors and turbo were not serviced or reconditioned as the machanic believed them to be o.k. Fuel consumption is 13-16litres/100kms on the open road. I believe that io be poor.
