Electrical problem

i bought an 86 jetta gl two months ago. the car drives great but i have an
annoying problem. it is electrical in nature. all the lights on the car;
headlights, instrument panel lights and even the dome light dim and brighten
all the time. it is worse at idle. i dont think it is the altenator because
the battery hasn't drained down. the car always starts with the first turn of
the key. could it be the voltage regulator or a ground problem? this is my
first volkswagen and any help is greatly appreciated.

It's probably your voltage regulator. I've seen the oscillation you've
described get so bad that the oil pressure warning light started to
flicker (it's voltage sensitive).
If you feel like pulling the alternator, you can take out the regulator
and try cleaning all the various accessible contacts, paying close
attention to the sense and ground connections. This has worked for me.
If that doesn't work, check for bad grounds or poor connections in the
charging system in general. Failing that, try replacing the regulator. I
always try the cheapest solution first. :-)

Good Luck!
