i bought an 86 jetta gl two months ago. the car drives great but i have an annoying problem. it is electrical in nature. all the lights on the car; headlights, instrument panel lights and even the dome light dim and brighten all the time. it is worse at idle. i dont think it is the altenator because the battery hasn't drained down. the car always starts with the first turn of the key. could it be the voltage regulator or a ground problem? this is my first volkswagen and any help is greatly appreciated.
i've just bought a Golf Mk1 and the ignition switches the car on but it wont switch off. Any ideas whats wrong with the car.

It's probably your voltage regulator. I've seen the oscillation you've described get so bad that the oil pressure warning light started to flicker (it's voltage sensitive). If you feel like pulling the alternator, you can take out the regulator and try cleaning all the various accessible contacts, paying close attention to the sense and ground connections. This has worked for me. If that doesn't work, check for bad grounds or poor connections in the charging system in general. Failing that, try replacing the regulator. I always try the cheapest solution first. :-)

I have a 1997 TDI that is running too hot particually when on motaways. The water pump is metal and new, I've tried four themostats and a new reservoir cap. It seems that it is over pressurising and coolant escapes the header tank through the overflow. Usually the top hose is red hot and the bottom and rad is cold - so its like the thermostat is not working - but it does work when tested ! Its driving me mad !

1988 vw golf turns over, won't start. How can I tell if it is getting gas and spark. It has a new cap and rotor someone just replaced. Could those be installed improperly?

Im having a problem with my cars rear indicators They work fine, unless I have my lights on, once my lights are
on however its a different story, instead of the rear indicators flashing only the brakes and
high-stop flash. Could it possibly be a bad earth? how would I go about checking this?

I replaced the seal in the injector pump and ever since then the car smokes big time and has lost a lot of power. Is there any way that this injector pump is off time and if it is how do you time it?
