'92 4Runner rear window problem...help!

By paulrmc - usenet poster

I've just purchased a '92 4runner in amazing condition. Only problem is that
rear window won't lower when using either key or switch in front. I can hear
the relay clicking behind drivers side rear panel but no sound or action at
the motor.

This is my first toyota and I'm a little unfamiliar with the logic of the
electrical system. Can anyone help?

Cheers,

R.

-   I have a 93 4runner. The rear window will only go up or down if I am driving over the curb (even then, intermittently). The window will not go up or down if the vehicle is stationary and using the console switch or the key in the rear door lock. The switch makes a clicking sound but the motor does not engage. -   Guest

-   I have a '92 4Runner, 3.0 l V-6, 5 - Speed. It keeps on blowing the 20 Amp fuse that protects the windshield wiper and rear window control switch in the console. I am still able to roll the rear window down from outside the vehicle so it's not the motor itself, can you help?-   jhanniford

-   I got a 87 4runner and I removed the top. When I put the top back on and plugged the electrical socket back together, now the window won't go up, either using the key or the button on the center console. I also checked the fuses and no problems there. I used contact cleaner in the socket and tried again, and of course, no such luck in working. Then I checked the rear window wiper as well, and still nothing. What else could it be, I'm stumped?

(fiberglass roof) there is a limit switch on passenger side which a bolt pushes on to enable the rear window to operate second from the back near the rollbar support if the bolt isnt wound in properly or the limit sw. is sticky will inhibit the window from working

Sounds like a bad connection between the relay and the motor or the
motor is shot. I have a '90 and the tailgate area was rusted along
with the window hardware. I gutted it but still have everything. The
motor still works good. If you need one, let me know by email.

Make sure the wiper is fully parked, then make sure both side latches
are locked (push on each corner to confirm) and if it still doesnt work,
grab the rear wiper and push up slightly while using the key in the gate
to go up. If none of htese work, it can be a failed motor or another
problem.

For the rear window to operate, it needs to see several things happen. First, it needs to see the rear wiper in the 'home' position. Next it needs to see the tailgate closed, and latched on both latches. It also needs to see the rear door locked.

You will also want to check the rear window relay assembly as well. It should be on the drivers side, in the rear quarter panel under the window. Those trucks have a tendancy to leak water through the window seal, and get that relay assembly. Toyota also did a wonderful job of making sure the connectors of the relay were facing up, as to act like a cup and try to catch and savor as much water as possible.

Also check the window lock switch. It is very possible that it has gone bad. That relay gets its ground through that lockout switch in the center console. If this switch goes bad in the open position, you could be able to roll the window up with the key in the tailgate, but not down. the switch in the console will be inoperative at all times.

I'd recommend getting ahold of an electrical wiring diagram for your vehicle, it wil pay for itself the first time you use it in shop/labor fees alone. It will give you all the information you will need to know to fix your problem.

Good luck!

When I had this problem on my '92 it was intermittent... ultimately it was the relay assembly mentioned by Ilovechesse. The Omron relays were failing. At the time I could get them thru my job and soldered in new relays... I have seen these in junk yards also

I recently just had the same problem with my exact same model 4runner. The problem with mine was that the door locks weren't locking all the way. The way I fixed it was that I climbed in the back, opened up the panel on the tailgate, unscrewed the black plate, take the plastic off and there is the regulator and all parts. Its kind of hard but stick your hand through the right side of the tailgate(from facing inside) and unscrew the 3 bolts holding the motor in. Take it off and slide the window down. Now you should be able to open the tailgate by the way you would normally open it. Once open close both locks on the tailgate (make sure they snap) and try to see if your window will move. If it does then make sure your tailgate is shut hard.

it could be a short it could be a faulty wire running to the motor but most likely your motor is burnt out, take to ase certified tech and get the motor replaced

I have just troubleshot and rebuilt the rear power window mechanism on my 92. The way I determined whether it was the "Rear Power Window/Rear Wiper Relay"(left rear panel) or the window motor was by applying 12v of power directly to the motor. Caution become fully familiar with rear window mechanism before applying power directly to motor!! I went to the junk yard and found a replacement for cheap.

As a quick check on the motor and switches try using your key at the back and
while doing so press hard on the tailgate at the very top corner. I've had the
most luck pushing on the driver's side since I believe that is the side with
the sensor. It could be on the other side on the 90's model, I don't really
know.
On my '85 it will get a bit out of adjustment and I assume what happens is the
sensor that detects that the tailgate is completely shut does not actuate. I
have in the past even had something get slammed in the tailgate at the bottom
between the tailgate and floor of the bed and that will get it out of position
enough to stop the window from working.
Just be glad it isn't an '85! I think there are something like 12-14 total
different switches and relays just for the window to make sure: window is
closed, window isn't closed, tailgate is open so window won't raise, top is off
so window won't raise, there is duck in a bog in Scotland with a sore foot so
window will only raise halfway while bagpipes soundI wish the damn thing
just had a crank handle on it...
