2003 Malibu Accelerates by itself?

By Ranny - usenet poster

On occasion, while driving, at 25mph the car accelerates by itself to
4000 rpm/75mph unless I brake. Turning off the cruise control or
braking does not affect it. If I step on the gas pedal quickly it
releases(Cruise?). If I again accelerate to 25mph, it takes off again.
There is nothing stuck under the pedal. Note it doesnt stay the same
speed, it accelerates.
Chevy Service is stumped. This is an intermittent problem. I believe
it is related to the cruise control. I wonder if any other
manufacturers have had this happen.

I had the same problem with my MBZ 300E ???89. Exactly the same
symptom. After expensive repairs, the problem was "more or less"
repaired. My new mechanic tells me it is related not to the cruise
(which I have) but to the idle regulator (?). Also turns out my old
mechanic disconnected the idle regulator.

I am going to watch this thread for any ideas

Very interesting. I wonder, is it the idle regulator or the control
signal from the computer. Disconnecting it may have just been treating
the symptom not the cause I fear. I suspect the computer faulty or the
cruise may be sending a misleading input to the computer, which is
then overcompensating the idler action.
I think I will try to get a schematic/service manual on a chevy that
uses the same/similar computer/cruise control. Maybe from there I can
isolate the problem by comparison checks. What do you think? Anyone
know if an earlier model chevy uses the same parts?
Thanx for the info thusfar!

There is a recall out for a sticking throttle problem...might be
related, although it sounds like something in the cruise control
electronics is messed up.

I had this happen on an old car once. Freezing weather froze the
accelerator cable (probably due to water ingress). A 2003 Malibu sounds
to recent to have this issue, but thought I'd mention anyway. Could be a
frayed cable maybe?

I know it???s a little late, but I had the same issue and it turned out
to be the throttle position sensor.
