If the seal is leaking it usually means some clearance is off. I suggest that you consider a rebuilt P/S unit. way easier. It takes special tool to pull the arm off..

Sounds like the pitman arm. See #5 on diagram below. It has a ball joint with grease that is held in with a boot. It the boot is cracked open, you should replace the arm. You will need an alignment after replacing the arm. The arm does not contain any steering fluid, so if that is leaking, you have another seal broken somewhere...

Power Steering reservoir leaking and dripping on Serpentine Belt, possible cause of loose belt movement (has come off once already). Wobble of A/C Pulley, resulting in A/C not cooling.


Power steering pump shaft seal is leaking, You can add a table spoon of DOT 3 brake fluid to the steering fluid to condition the seal. The A/C pulley wobble is a compressor clutch bearing problem and requires the correct puller to replace. Replace the clutch as a unit, to avoid messing with the bearing. Replace the belt if the steering fluid leak stops. If the brake fluid trick does not work, replace the steering pump. Parts and labor will be better than 200.00

The bubbling is just the air being removed by fluid, no problem. the foaming is just the pump action, no problem. As for the leakage, remove the pitman arm and replace the seal on shaft the pitman arm is bolted to. If you still have leakage, replace the seal in the top of the box where the column bolts to the box for it's just running down the box and looking like the leak is from the bottom seal.

Steering fluid leak; oil covering steering gear box


if the leak is coming from the steering box there are usually only 3 places it can come from;most common place is the pitman shaft seal,which can be replaced.this is were the pitman arm of the steering connects to the steering box.another place is the steering box input shaft seal,this is were the steering colume connects to the steering box,which can be replace.the last place is the power steering hoses were they connect to the steering box.there are seals that seal the lines when screwed into the box which can also be replaced.so first you need to see exactly were the leak is coming from.rare occasions the steering box is porous which means the box will need replacing.a car of this age should have shown up long ago.you will have to clean the box off at the car wash then run the car and turn the steering wheel all the way to one side,this will build up pressure in the system to show up the leak quicker.

The pitman arm seal can be replaced by removing the pitman arm, prying out the old seal and driving in a new one. However, usually when the seals start to leak it's from a bad bearing or excessive play in the steering box.

The easiest way is also the messiest.
Remove pit-man arm nut,Mark the pit-man arm and shaft with a colored marker,to assure you reinstall the arm in the correct position.use a pit-man arm puller to remove pi-man arm.When you get off the shaft,swing it out of your way,leaving the other end connected.Looking up in the steering box you will see a snap ring that you need to remove.When you get it out of there,reinstall the pit-man arm and nut to the correct position but don't tighten completely.Now refill the power steering box with fluid and put the cap back on the steering box.Put a pan under the pitman arm to catch the fluid.Start the engine and turn the steering in one direction as sharp as it will go,you'll here it in a bind but hold it tight,Then turn the steering wheel the complete opposite direction and turn it tight.This will use the power steering to blow the seals out!
Shut engine off,look under car and your seals will be pushed out but held in place by the pitman arm you reinstalled.Now you can remove the arm and REMEMBER how they came out,just incase there is no picture instruction with your new seal kit.

What would happen if the lower sector shaft seals were damaged


Are you refering to the seal on the bottom side of the steering gear box? The side the pitman arm connects? If the seal is damaged and leaking you can run out of power steering fluid which in turn could rouine your power steering pump and steering gear box.

What I think you are referring to as the pump is really the steering box because the pump doesn't have an arm connected to it. The pump has 2 hoses and a belt going to it. From what you describe it sounds like you need a pitman shaft seal. The seal is replaceable but you will need a pitman arm puller to get the pitman arm off. If you don't have or can't get a puller don't even bother starting the repair, as you WILL NOT get the pitman arm off without one. When you get the pitman arm off clean out around the shaft and you will see a snap ring. Remove the snap ring. Now make sure the power steering is full of fluid. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel all the way one way or the other and hold it there while increasing the RPM. Doing this will literally "BLOW" the seal out. There will be a couple of spacers and maybe another seal that come out of the hole also. So read the installation instructions that come with the seal kit and it will have a picture of where the components go and in what order they go in. Don't forget the snap ring. When done replaceing the seal you have to center the steering box. From all the way one way turn the steering wheel all the way the other way and count the turns. Now turn back the other way half as many turns and the box is centered. With the tires pointed straight (not turning) the pitman arm should go right on. The pitman arm will go on the pitman shaft in 4 different places. So if you don't center the box and the wheels you might have say one turn to the right before the steering wheel stops and three turns to the left. With all this done fill the power steering with fluid. With the front tires off the ground and the engine NOT running turn the steering wheel all the way from stop to stop 4 or 5 times and then check the fluid again. Fill the fluid and turn wheel from stop to stop another 4 or 5 times. Doing this will "bleed" most of the air out of the system. Now start the engine and turn wheel from stop to stop a few more times to "bleed" any remaining air from system. Turn off the engine and check fluid level. Hope this is helpful.

Steering box leaking


take big nut off that holds pitman arm to it ,use pitman arm puller to pull off pitman arm. I would get a rebuilt unit ,my luck is that the shaft is so foofed that the new seal wont seal it either. also that shaft that connects to the pitman arm probably moves side toside, so the bushings inside are shot. remember this thing is OLD
