At the front of the engine you will find a pulley that will drive the belts to run the water pump, alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner, etc. This pulley is called the 'Harmonic Balancer' and is actually 2 pieces pressed together on a rubber bush which acts as a 'shock absorber' for the engine. This pulley is marked with several lines to indicate the position of the engine rotation, measured in degrees. The longest line usually indicates TDC (Top Dead Centre of piston No 1). The other lines indicate where ignition should fire (Usually between 5-10 degrees before TDC) and where valves are opened and closed (before and after TDC) both ignition and valve timing vary depending on engine/camshaft configuration. The lines on the harmonic balancer will align with a pointer that is cast into the timing cover.

I need the required valve & inyector clearance on a M11 engine


Cummins M11

Intake valve clearance 0.010 inch
Exhaust valve clearance 0.024 inch

The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4 and that is the order the valves should be adjusted started with first timing mark on main pulley adjust cylinder number 1 The valves and injector should be adjusted at the same time The crankshaft is then rotated 120 degrees to next timing mark and cylinder 5 is adjusted, the crank is rotated again 120 degrees to next timing mark and cylinder 3 is adjusted.then back to the first timing mark, cylinder 6 is adjusted, etc/

Adjusting nut on plunger should be adjusted to the point where you feel the plunger just reaches the bottom.of travel/bottoms out.

Are you changing the timing belt? If you are then you need to make sure that the mark on your valves and crankshaft are aline.

If you are timing your engine then the timing marks are on your flywheel and you need a timing light to sync it. Good Luck

I removed the distibutor from my 4.9 inline 6 without making any positioning marks. now i can't get the truck to start. i'm reasonably sure that i have found tdc on cylinder one on the correct stroke and...


Hi Mike.

No sir, no computer reset.

Use cylinder #5 TDC compression stroke to set up the timing marks on the harmonic balancer and point the rotor at the #5 ignition terminal on the cap.
Also when you get it running, use #5 wire to set your timing to 10 degrees with the spout connector at the distributor unplugged.
Not sure why Ford used #5 cylinder on the 4.9, probably just a joke by the engineers.

If you mean valve timing (there is no adjustment for ignition timing), see diagram below from autozone.com. Make sure belt is tight on the right side with gears in these positions:

Firing order and timing for 292 ford


The firing order is 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2, distributor turns counter-clockwise. The ignition timing can be set using marks on the vibration damper. The wide mark is TDC (Top Dead Center), each mark after the wide mark represents 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 degrees before TDC. Set timing 3 degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center). In addition, valve timingis set like this: Intake opens: 12 degrees BTDC
Exhaust Closes: 8 degrees ATDC

Need timing marks for 2002 ford explorer 4.0 engine. trying 2 check timing chain. any one know specs


There are no marks on this one. There is a special tool set to align camshafts ($900). The best you can do is to bring #1 cyl to TDC compression with both cam(valve) covers off. #5 cyl should have lobes at equal opening, exhaust just closing and intake just opening.. #1 cyl cam lobes should each be diametrically opposed to the positions of #5. If cams need to be moved, there is no registration of gear onto cam. Just loosen bolt holding gear and move cam. Retighten bolt. Roll thru 2 crank revolutions and check cam timing again.Simple.
