The cable is adjustable using a deep socket to tighten the "y" connector near the fuel tank under the car, but the rear brakes should be inspected for wear before adjusting the cable.

SOURCE: Emergency brake repair

sounds like you need an emergency brake adjustment. Around 35 dollars. I'm sure while it's being adjusted the brtakes will also be inspected. Rear brakes might also be low.

SOURCE: EMERGENCY BRAKE PEDAL GOES DOWN TO THE FLOOR WHEN ENGAGED

sounds like you have a worn set of park break shoes. they are located inside /behind the read rotors. if you remove the rotor and the shoes look fine then you can adjust them with the little star gear located on the bottom of the brake shoes.

SOURCE: constantly needs brake fluid refilled

have your lines checked for leaks. if the rear brakes are drum brakes check your wheel cylinders (look under the back of the car and if the back of one tire is dry and ther other is wet and its all up into your wheel well theres your culpret). check your brake calipers to make sure fluid isn't slowly leaking past the piston (that could get ugly VERY quick and you would lose brakes and it always seems to happen on a hill too) if those are fine i would check your master cylinder

Get it towed someplace for a complete brakejob. Don't take the chace of driving it. If you have AAA or are an AARP member you can get a free tow.

SOURCE: with engine stopped brakes hard as rock, after

I would venture to say that it's the brake vacuum booster (between the master cylinder and firewall). Sometimes there's a small check valve in the line that supplies the brake booster with vacuum. Best case scenario It can go bad and cause just such a problem. Otherwise the diaphragm in the brake booster is probably going bad. I believe these are the starting point for a simple solution. However there may be other more costly options.

NO BRAKES

First check the brake fluid. If low, add to the full mark and check for leaks- fluid should never normally need adding. If the brake reservoir was dry, you will have to bleed all four brakes.
If the fluid is not low, then probably the brake master cylinder has gone bad. The internal seals can give out and won't make pressure.

My ABS light has been on for a while and today I hit the brakes and they turned spongy. Then I pushed the pedal some more and the brake pedal went right to the floor. Then the emergency light came on and I...

I hope you have enough sense to stop driving it and stop added brake fluid

Lets review:

ABS Light is on--You may have an ABS System failure,do we continue to drive it, no
But you did,you said awhile
Spongy brakes--normal,I don't think so
Brakes go to floor--how many things can cause that, maybe 2
Emergency Light--now were in big trouble,no brake fluid
Added Brake Fluid---no fluids are consumed on a motor vehicle
any fluid loss is from a leak and requires repair
You never top off any fluid, don't need to

You have an older vehicle with rusted out brake lines
You need to buy brake tubing, cut, bend, flair and fabricate new ones
No vehicle in history, ever had brake lines made for replacement

Have brakes with vehicle off, when car is started brake pedal goes to floor

Very careful here you have no Fluid or very very low fluid possible Broken brake line busted
look carefullly at where it sits Check the ground Observe the fluid resorvoir for fluid IF its very low below the chambers walls in the resorvoir you may have to add then bleed off the air in the lines that got sucked in BUT first Try your emergency brake... use it and be ready to pull it up after car starts and goes into gear . Be ready to yank that Emergency up to stop vehicle if pedal does not have enough pressure in line to stop the car.. if its low add if its empty be prepared to see a puddlew of clear brake fluid on ground under vehicle 91 likely broken line they rust out...had a 92 line brake just pressing the pedal in driveway ...at full speed you will coast for blocks until you figure out to use Emergency brakes or Turn off key steer to open spaces my friend ... nothing to trifle with innocent folks walking have no idea you can not stop

My brake light keeps coming on, but i have brake fluid and the emergency parking brake isnt on. what is it?

If you had your brakes serviced lately it could be air in the lines a little air can cause the light to come on. try bleeding the entire system . there is a float in most resevoirs, you can make sure it is full and try tapping the resevoir to make sure the float is up. one other to check is the master cylinder, if you press the pedal and it stops , then starts going to the floor board it may have bad o-rings causing glowby

Emergency stopping, brake pedal went almost to the floor, took long distance to stop, antilock pulsated just before stopping.Feels like uneven aplication of front and rear brakes. And what is the brake fluid...

if the brake edal goes to the floor then either the booster is bad or low on fluid. There is a line on the side of the fluid reservoir to fill too.
