Festiva Mystery?

By Chandler - usenet poster

I have a 1988 Festiva with carb no fuel injection. I just recently got
it for cheap just because someone did not want it. Ran fine when I
started it up a little weak so I replaced the plugs, distrubuter cap,
and rotor all were worn but no obvious problems. Ran great after that
about 1 day later it started not wanting to take the fuel properly when
you pressed accelerator then right after that it started stalling in
traffic. So I drove it home and it cut off and I got it started one time
ran really rough and the tach was going off and on. Then it cut off and
I have not been able to get it started since. You can see fuel in carb
when you press accelerator and the coil has a good spark, also a good
spark to the plug wires. I am stumped why it won't start. Anybody have
any ideas please email me I sure would appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

Can you say condenser? This same thing happen in both my 1964 Ford
Galaxy PI and the 68 Lincoln. Everything else was alright but they both
exhibited the same symptoms that you described. Replaced the condenser
and viola!

Shit in the carb ! (That's not a suggestion BTW - but a possible source of the
problem)

The idle jets may be blocked or the idle fuel cut off valve (if US models have
them) may not be working. If there is one fitted you should take it off and
when the wire is connected with the ignition on, the plunger should retract. If
that's ok then strip the carb and blow all the jets out.

I had the same symtoms with a 89 Festiva (may she rest in peace) and it
turned out to be the timing belt had slipped several steps so tha t it ran
real bad and kept stalling in traffic.

I think I have figured out that it is something with the timing. Does
anyone know how to check that on this Festiva. I just got the car and
don't know a lot about it yet. Trying to get it running for the kid
(you??know how it is) any help would be appreciated also how difficult
to change the timing belt. I have moderate mechanical ability.
