I have an 850 Turbo, 1996 model sedan. It's Tropical Green Metallic. It's has 106k on the clock, and runs like a bat out of hell.
I have only had it for a year, it could have a mod or two, who knows.
What I do know is that all the regular productional BMW's, that LOOK good, can't keep up.
Talk about weak cars. You could outrun one in a Chevy truck. And don't laugh, they rehabbed the 327
I'm serious, the BMW's have and hold a better resale profile than does the Volvo in any model it seems. But as for quality of car, shucks there is no comparison.
In an embarrassing moment I drove off and left a driver in a new '02 7 series BMW who had indicated they wanted to run the machines.
Too bad, I couldn't see any trace of them in the rear view mirror.
Oh well, I'm glad the whole world hasn't fastened onto Volvo like we have, save there wouldn't be any used ones to buy!!
not everyone beats their car to death so you may think it's the fasts thing on the road but most of us that own a car don't race it and don't take chances with our licence your not winning the races most people know racing is for the track not the road so please for everyone's safety grow up
I have a 1996 Volvo 850 GLT and i want t turbo sooo bad but i luv the car to death :) anyone wanna sell theirs or trade???

Yes, Volvo Turbos are pretty wicked fast.
I distinctly recall a TV spot a few years ago showing a Volvo and a BMW dueling it out on some city highway, only to have the Volvo blow past the Beemer, revealing the Volvo was a _station wagon_!
My wife's cousin told me 850 turbo wagons were pretty popular, and pretty successful, on the amateur pure stock car race circuit.

BMW's aren't designed for drag racing. Try running a 540i from 45 to 90 and you'll be the one seeing tail lights.
I've got a 960 and a 633CSi. Neither one is serious competition to MB or Porsche for fit and finish.

Agree on that point. I've got a great 633csi story tho, bought a new 5 series years ago and brought it back because the e brake didn't work. Parked it at the bay (level ground) to have it adjusted. It was supposed to be quick so I waited. The mech moves it to the top of the lot (not level) gets out (leaves in nuetral) and it rolls down the hill and T's into a 633csi that is being presented to it's new owner. Oh yes he's standing right there. BMW dealership had the temerity to ask for my insurance info. When I pointed out the work order info they backed off that pretty quick.
Always liked the 633 but never owned one. dad

Quality of car, no comparison? You mean Volvo is better or BMW is better. I have found that all the German and Swedish car company exude a tremendous amount of quality in fit and finish. I mean my dads new VW Golf (1999 TDi, fully loaded, got it for $6500 off his company, such a great deal) is a $30K vehicle, with Audi switch gear, and VW/Audi fit and finish, which is excellent. All the new Volvo's, BMWs, Benz's are all TOP quality compared to any other cars. ...

The 850's are quick cars, still I'd have to say the fastest car I've ever driven was a lightly modified BMW M3, absolutely amazing machine, scary fast, wonderfully smooth, and cornered like it was on rails. They're RWD too, something I really wish I could say about the 850.

I don't know about that. Volvos and Benz quality isn't always up to snuff. Audi/VW fit and finish is wonderful, but reliability is a problem with some VW's and some Audis. Benz has some cheap bits in the C car and previous E car, and for the money, the S cars don't have the best fit and finish or materials quality. Volvos have, now and then, a few cars with questionable fit and finish. Also Volvos will rattle and squeak before the Germans but plenty BMW owners have reported rattles and squeaks.
The Japanese quality is wonderful, especially Toyota/Lexus. Honda is up there too. Subaru isn't bad, either. I don't think that Benz quality exceeds Toyota's superb Lexus devision's quality. And Lexus is more reliable overall than any of the Europeans, and in the US has better dealer service.

JAPANESE QUALITY???? WHERE???? I CAN'T SEE IT!!!!
There plastic is molded poorly, there is flashing error around the parts, for the large dashboard components especially, they never line up correctly, they use inferior grades of plastic compared to Euro's. I have seen trunks that don't close straight on NEW accords and camrys. Lexus, yeah they are good, but not THAT great... Eurpean fit and finish is much better. Then you look at the areas were most people NEVER look, that is where you can see who builds a good car, toyota, honda, its all cheap shit European stuff is much better throughout. This is especially evident in the lesser priced cars (for 50-60K EVERYONE should be up to snuff with fit and finish, its 20-30K where it counts). Take a look at a VW Golf/Jetta , or a Volvo S40, it will be much better made then the Jap competition (of wait, they don't make a personal luxury car, they only make tiny ones, and then family sedans) ...
