Hello Joey325,
Look under the hood on the fire wall behind the engine there is a black cover with 3 tall black what look like nuts. remove them and you will see a relay center, now there should be a brown wire marked timing may be not marked but pretty sure its brown just unplug it and go from there. I sure hopes that gets you going and thanks for using

SOURCE: I bought my 2003 chevrolet

Hello Justin.

It appears you are looking after your pickup well.

A couple words of advise.
Don't over oil the K&N. Excess oils will deposit on the mass airflow sensor on the intake duct and insulate the hotwire inside it.

Also if it hasn't been done already, synthetic gear lubes in the differentials are great value. They last for a long time and a reduction in friction will also help save fuel, especially if you live in a colder climate.

If your truck has an automatic transmission there is a filter that should be changed if it hasn't been done already. The pan will need to be dropped in order to change it.

Also just in case someone tries to sell you a cabin air filter.
Starting in 2003 model year, the passenger compartment air filter is no longer available as a factory option. With the redesigned HVAC case, there is no longer a cavity for the filter. The GM parts catalog indicates there is a replacement filter available; however, there is no provision for it.

And of course the fuel filter. This is mounted on the inside of the frame on the left side.
A restricted or plugged fuel filter can overwork the electric fuel pump that is inside the fuel tank.

That pretty much covers the normal maintainence filters Justin.
I hope you get it to 500,000 miles.
Thank you for using FixYa.

There are several steps to removing the oil pan, especially if your 1500 is a 4 wheel drive. It's a pretty involved procedure. You are way better off buying a repair manual, such as the Haynes manual for your vehicle.

We just bought a used 1999 silverado 5.3l 4x4 and i am not sure what type oil to use for an oil change

The oil weight is on the oil fill cap. (Usually 5w-30) Use a good oil, synthetic is better, but changing at 3000 miles for regular oil is good.

Just purchased vehicle and don't have an owners manuel for maintaince specs.

Haynes manual 24071 covers the new style S-10, Sonoma, Blazer and Jimmy. It will give you all specs for the motor, transmission, and any other options. I have a '91 S-10 and a '96 Jimmy. All specs from Oil Type, Transmission fluid type, and the weight of gear oil needed are included. It also offers step by step instructions on how to perform most repairs and tourque specs on almost all bolts. Good luck and wise choice on vehicles.
