Question about 1995 Chevrolet G20

1 Answer

My 1995 Chevy g20 sportvan lost the pwr steerin and pwr brakes at once yesterday I was able to drive it but took a heck of alot to brake driving at minimal speeds for caution and very hard to steer. I went to a meinekeand they told me it was the master cylinder with hydro boost( the part conected to the resevoir for the brake fluid and power steering fluid they told me $500.00 to fix I went to my local auto parts store and the part that I mentioned to them didnot look like the part that meineke showed me and the part alone was 99.00 bucks. Can someone help me with what the problem reallly is and what the exact part is that i neeed to change I would like to cahnge it myself due to lack of funds but please help??? Thanking you in advance

Thank you, I am also thinking that it could be the power steering pump that went because my steering fluid is not circuklating in the resevoir. I have picked up a new power steering pump and figured hat would be the easier fix of the two, I did get the idea from a freind who is a mechanic but lives in California, I am on the east coast so couldnt have him do it

Yes, the diagnostic appears to be right - the hydroboost unit is nothing but a servo unit that is powered by the oil pump for the steering, if it fails the pressure in the pump is lost so the steering servo is out also. Yes, the bill also appears to be right - it's a long and complicated job to access and remove the master cylinder and the part is actually cheap at $9, i could only find it at $140 here

The part might look slightly different because it was manufactured  by different factories - but with the same specifications.
Since this repair makes the disconnection of the brakes mandatory , it should be left to a shop - unless you are absolutely sure that you can do a perfect job on the brakes, don't touch them, your safety is at risk here.

As i said the job demands to be done very carefully - the pipes for the brakes should be very firmly attached and the entire pump very carefully installed. It's not a complicated job, but it must be done perfectly, so beware. If you decide to do it yourself check every bolt and connection twice.

  • A charging system "V" belt and a Power Steering Pump "V"belt. The size depends on AC or not and weather or not it is a manual transmission. I have provided a link for you so you have a place to order your belts from if you so choose. You can also see the belts you need.

I have a 1985 chevy g20 sportvan the tranny is slipping i need a new one it has a tubo 350 in it and i need to know how to tell if it is short or long

What your looking for is the length of the rear tail shaft housing on the transmission. You want to measure the length of the one on your vans transmission. You will need to get under your van and measure from where the drive shaft slides into the back of the transmission to one of the 4 bolts a the front of that housing.

My abs light stays on 1995 chevy G20 van and have to replace front brakes every 6 months but rear brakes show no wear and are atleast 3 yrs old. On slick pavement right front brake sometimes locks when...

I'd be checking the sensor (ABS) at that wheel, (right front) and adjusting rear brakes to proper clearance, as well as inspect them for proper operation with wheels off.
