Hi Mark, this could be a few things, first off, is the clutch ok? sounds like the clutch may be slipping, if that is ok, there could be a fault with the MAF ( mass air flow sensor ) have you got the engine light on the dash? this also could be a fuel flow problem, you don't say what type of transit it is, ie petrol or diesel if its petrol it might be the injector system may need cleaning or the injectors are not getting enough fuel to them, fuel pump distribution may be low, check fuel filter make sure its not blocked, if diesel you might have a collapsed cat or a restriction in the exhaust, fuel pump timing could be out, glow plugs not heating up enough so not burning fuel properly there's a few things to be looking at hope this helps , if you find it please post your findings to me thanks

    hi Mark
you could also check the air filter to see if it is blocked, the worst senario would be the head gasket, you will have to get the pots pressure checked, all of them should be over 18bar/260psi if not then you might have a u/s head gasket, to be honest there are loads of things that could cause this i could go on lol, so just give them things a try first start with the easy stuff, fuel filter air filter, check timing, then work your way around to the hard stuff like pressure checking injectors and pots..ok

Why won't a 2005 Taurus with a fax transmission shift into 3rd gear?

run the fault codes and check for a servo/solenoid fault or a faulty TCM module.

Losing power going up hills

sounds pretty normal. what speed do you try out the passing gear? anything above 35-45 mph and it will feel like neutral. Passing gear is actually only 1st gear. When you press down the pedal, it forces the transmisson to shift into low gear.

Does overdrive effect the gas usage in a 2003 Ford Focus

Yes. Overdrive helps get better milage in all vehicles. It is simply put, just an extra gear. When you go through 1st, then 2nd, 3rd, then OD (in automatic - 5th gear in manual)

All it does is allow the engine to run at lower speed while maintaining crusing speed. It does not have a lot of power, it's notsupposed to. It is to save fuel at higher speeds, particularly over distance travel..

In city driving it can slow the changing of gears. Better to turn it off for more low speed control.

Ford transmission wines in 1st 2nd 3rd revers, no

It is a 5 speed manual transmission? If it is noisey in all gears except for 4th, then the problem is countershaft bearings.

Desciption of the gear positions on the automatic gear shift

The gearbox normally shifts like this in "D":

1st gear to 2nd gear

2nd gear to 3rd gear

3rd gear to OverDrive

If you have the selector in "2", it will not make the final 2 shifts. "2" is nice for descending very steepo hills slowly, and also is nice to use coming down hills when it is icy/snowy, the engine will slow down in "2", and you will not have to depress the brake pedal.
