Problem for Toyota 1995 Land Cruiser

1995 Land Cruiser Advice

Can you provide me your thoughts? My wife and I have decided to buy
an FJ80 and FZJ80 Land Cruiser in the US. Most use will be on-road,
but we will be taking it off road, especially Big Bend in West Texas.
We have a few questions:

- I've been watching the vehicles for sale on Ebay. In the past two
or three weeks, there have been NO 1995's for sale, but plenty of
'91's, 92'2, '96's etc. Any idea why? Are '95's so great, people are
hanging on to them?

- The '95's have a different transmission than the '94's (I think
it's the same as the 4Runner.) From a practical point of view
(reliability on road and off), is the '94 better in this respect than
the '95? Why or why not?

- We've test driven '91's, '92's and '95's. We didn't get car sick
in the '95. Could this be as result of the design of the vehicle, or
could it simply be bad shocks on the older vehicles and replacing them
would give a better on-road ride?

- Do all FJ80's and FZJ80's come with center diff lock? Auto locking
hubs?

- If all have Auto locking hubs, what's the advantage of the ARB air
lockers?

Thanks very much for your thoughts.

Not sure why.

IIRC< its the 93 - 94 models wehre the tranny was changed from the heavy
duty a440f to the 4Runner tranny.
Personally, I'd look for a 93, but they are all good trucks.

The 1991/92 use the 3FE motor, which is basically a tractor engine. In 1993,
Toyota put in the 1FZ-FE motor, which is dual overhead cams, 4.5 litres,
etc. This motor was used until the end of the Land Cruiser run in 1997. In
1998, the Lexus rebadged as land cruiser was ntroduced. Also, since the 91
and 92 are older trucks, their suspensions have worn more. Easliy fixed.

Yes, all com ewith center diff lock. The diff locks automatically when you
are in 4Low. Auto locking hubs? No, none come with auto locking hubs, as all
USA spec LAnd Cruisers from 91- present are full time 4 wheel drive. The
hubs are locked all the time (they actually use a drive plate, not a locking
hub).

ARB Air lockers lock the differentials, not the hubs. The LAnd Cruisers came
with an option for front and rear differential locks. These are a VERY
desirable option, as tehy are BULLET PROOF, and you get a rear full floating
axle, and rear disc brakes.

The hubs lock, not the diff.

When you flick a switch in your cab the hubs will lock, meaning that you
will have traction to the front wheels, but the differential will still be
allowed to slip, which can sometimes cause you problems when 4x4ing.

An ARB Air-locker locks the Diff (generally the back diff, but it can be
front, back, or both (you'd need two air lockers for that). A locking diff
is MUCH better for straight line four wheel driving (Ie when you're stuck
and you want OUT - a Diff Lock will increase your chances). It is an
advantage, but from what it looks like you'll be using your 4x4 for, it is
probably an expense you can do without.

No matter what you buy, get someone to show you how to 4x4 before you try
anything crazy (which means anything more exciting than a dirt road). If
you get yourself into a place where a diff locker is the means of recovery
then you really want to know what you're doing, or you might end up having a
VERY expensive repair bill - it's not overly likely that you will kill
yourself, but you COULD.

if you still have a problem with you cdl
it will only engage in low range if you want it to engage in high range you will have to manually do it with the switch on the dash

its most likely that the vehicle has full time 4x4 in which case it
will be equipped with the center diff, which is what the switch on the
dash locks. :)

Its also unlikely that the dash switch can lock the hubs, because the
permanent 4x4 80series has permanently locked hubs. But if the 80 is
a base model it will have the part time 4x4 with either standard
manual hubs or replacement autohubs, in which case it wont have the
need for the central diff, and therefore no central diff-lock switch
on the dash. --- like your bj42.
