Question about Oldsmobile Alero

1 Answer

2001 Oldsmobile Alero 2.4L I replaced the body control module. I'm having a problem with the car not starting on the 4th try. The security light starts to flash and then you have to reprogram the body control module all over again. I've tried several BCMs and I keep getting the same thing. The radio is now locked out. I had an idea that the radio might be causing the problem, so I unhooked the radio and now the security light stays on full time. I know how to program the BCM, but I don't know how to program the radio. How do you program the radio so it will match the Body Control Module?

The radio won't program. The owner is now telling me that the knobs on the radio don't turn it off. I'm suspecting that somehow the security in the radio is somehow affecting the main security system, not allowing the engine to start. Is that possible? If so, I need to replace the radio. Have you come across any problem like this one?

When a GM radio displays the "LOC" this means the Theft Lock has been activated on the vehicle. The only way to get it to work after this occurs is to unlock the radio. The process for unlocking the radio is one that can be done by the dealer, but it can also be done by the car's owner in the driveway at home.

So instead of driving to the dealer and paying someoneto unlock the radio, follow this short process and save some money.

Instructions: Turn the ignition key to the "on" position. It may be necessary on some vehicles to start the vehicle. Most will not require the vehicle to be running:
1. Press and hold the preset buttons numbered two and three for 10 seconds at most. Write down the three-digit number that displays on the screen. Some radios will display only two digits.
2. Press the "AM/FM" button on the radio. Write down the second three-digit number. Again, some radios will only displaytwo digits. The AM/FM button has to be pressed quickly after getting the first code. If pressing the button does nothing, then start over.
3. Call 1-800-537-5140 and listen for the make of the vehicle: Chevrolet will be one, Oldsmobile will be two and so on.
4. Press the number corresponding to the make of the vehicle followed by 06010 then the "*" or star key. So for aChevrolet radio, for instance, the number entered will be 106010*.
5. Enter the four- or six-digit code retrieved from the radio. Then write down the code given over the phone.
6. Go back to the radio and press the "Hour Set" button until the first two digits of the code from the phone appear. Now press the "Minute Set" button until the second two digits of the code appear.
7. Press the "AM/FM" button. The word "SEC" should appear on the screen. If it does then turn the radio on and it will work. If not then repeat steps 4 through 7 and get additional codes.

If you bought the car new then there should be writen in the manual the code for the theft lock system on the radio. If pre-owned then it might, might not be in there. Or, if you dont have one at all, go to your nearest GM dealer and have them fix it by finding the code. Make sure to have them write it down for you incase this happens again. Be prepared to prove you own the vehicle.

Hope this helps.

I OWN a 2001 Olds Alero and the same thing happens to mine.. It's an easy fix..
1. Turn the Key to ACC (keep it in this mode for the entire 10 minutes).
2. The security light on the Dashboard will flash for exactly 10 minutes..
3. Once the 10 mins are over, the security light will stay solid..
Wait for the red light to disappear off the dashboard...
YOU ARE NOW READY TO TURN YOUR CAR OFF AND RESTART YOU CAR....

SIMPLE FIX..
I DO THIS ALL THE TIME TO MINE..

2001 Oldsmobile Alero, Passlock 2

There have been alot of this type problem you describe. That body style of GM car has had meny ignition issues with the PASSLOCK 2 system. The system for some reason thought it was being stolen, and shut down. The security light might not blink or come on at all in some cases. It should but may not. (if there are issues with the BCM (Body Control Module) or ECM (engine Control Module) The Chime you heard may have been a security reset indicator notice. Thlling you that the Security System incountered a problem, and was ready again.

Security light

Several GM products, including the Chevrolet Impala and Malibu, the Oldsmobile Alero, the Pontiac Grand Prix, and Saturn Ion, have issues with the Security light coming on. This is many times an indication of a failing Body Control Module (BCM). Initially, the Security light will come on then go off, progressing to a constant on light, before the car will refuse to start. Other symptoms may include erratic action of electronics, a clicking sound coming from the glove box, and the air conditioning failing to blow cold air. I recommend a shop that specializes in the electronic systems of vehicles to diagnosis and make the necessary repairs. They should keep the car until they replicate the symptoms described. A new BCM from GM should cost about $230; plan on another $200 for them to diagnose the problem, replace the unit, and program the new unit. The dealers quote between $700 and $1,100 for the same repair. My experience and the experiences I have read on the internet, indicate the new BCM should last only about a year.

Alero security

You can not remove the system. It is intergrated in to the powertrain control module, the body control module and the theft module. It as is tied in to you factory door locks. You can bypass it and disable it but you cant remove it without causing alot of problems

Anti-Lock and Trac Off lights are lit on my 1999 Alero, as well. They usually come on after about 5 minutes of driving, but are not always on when I start the car.
